Marion Palm Obituary

Marion Palm, 96, of Mystic CT, died peacefully at Avalon Health Center on July 24, 2024. She grew up in West Hartford CT, graduating from Oxford School and then Simmons College in Boston. She married Bill Palm and after several years living in Norfolk Virginia, they settled in Leicester MA, where at Leicester College, she was the librarian and Bill taught accounting.
Marion was full of energy and always on the move. She spent many years as a camper and then counselor at Brown Ledge Camp in Colchester, VT where she honed her skills as an accomplished sailor, swimmer and diver. After college she spent a winter in Alta, Utah working at the Alta Lodge in the early days of skiing in the west. She loved summers at her home in Weekapaug, RI where she excelled racing her Beetle Cat sailboat, played tennis and was an active participant in the community. In 2000 she received the Henry Morris Award for outstanding leadership and service to the Weekapaug community. On a summer day, she was easy to spot in her blue pickup with one or two (or three!) of her West Highland Terriers peaking their heads out the truck window watching the breeze. Marion loved music. She was volunteer with The Boston Symphony Orchestra, and regularly attended symphonies and concerts. Marion was very generous with both her time and money. Along with contributing and volunteering for many organizations, she helped young people she knew attend college through tuition support. Through her love of dogs, she became and active volunteer and supporter of NEADs, an organization that trains service dogs for the disabled. She was devoted to the Chorus of Westerly as both an enthusiastic audience member and important benefactor.
She generously supported her beloved Brown Ledge Camp throughout her adult life. Marion is preceded in death by her husband Bill, her sister Betsy, and her brother Jack. Memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to The Weekapaug Fire District, 4 Wawaloam Dr. Westerly, RI 02891.

We bought our home on Fenway Rd in 1983. How lucky were we to have Marion and Bill as our neighbors. Throughout the years we loved being her neighbor and friend. Our grandchildren would run to the deck every morning at 6:30 to yell up to her bedroom" good morning Mrs Palm" she would immediately open the slider and give them a big wave. When her chair lift was installed, she invited the boys over to take a ride.. She was exceptionally kind and her generosity was known throughout Weekapaug.
Blessed were we to know such a wonderful woman.

In addition to the many activities of Marion's life mentioned in her obituary, many of us knew her as a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the Friends of the Westerly Library Book Sales. She was a dedicated worker and a good friend.
