Mary Walter Obituary

WESTERLY -- Mary Louise (Foley) Walter was born on May 9, 1939, in Westerly, R.I. Mary Lou grew up on Stillman Avenue in Pawcatuck, attending St. Michaels's School and Stonington High School. It was at Stonington High that she met the love of her life, Ronald Walter. Ron and Mary Lou were married in 1960 and moved to Westerly, R.I. where they enjoyed 55 years of married life.

Mary Lou loved her life in Westerly with Ron and her two daughters, Susan, and Raeann. There, she kept a beautiful home adorned with many personally handcrafted pieces. Not one to waste a minute, Mary Lou always had a new project going. Whether she was making baskets, painting (anything), sewing curtains, making her daughters clothes, planting rock gardens, creating Christmas crafts to fill every room, or reading her Bible, she made every day count.

Outside of the home her life moved in much the same way. Never allowing an idle moment, Mary Lou taught preschool, coordinated St. Clare's May procession for many years, volunteered as a docent at the Babcock Smith House, was a Girl Scout Troop leader, served as Dunn's Corners Tax Collector, owned and operated a bookstore, and served as the State Representative for District 51 in the R.I. House of Representatives for 16 years.

Staying busy and productive was a huge part of her life, but her true passion was her family. A "Granny" to six grandchildren and now four great-grandchildren, Mary Lou treasured their visits. Summer and holiday visits always included breach way crabbing, Bradford rope swings, cookouts, bocce, badminton, trips to the Mystic Aquarium, arts and craft projects and trips to the farm. Many memories were made with Gran and Pop, and for that, we are all grateful.

Mary Lou lived a fabulous life and she was happy until the end. A firm believer in Jesus, she knew she was headed to be with Ron and her family in Heaven. A Celebration of Life in Mary Lou's honor will be held on Monday, May 20, 2024 at 11 a.m. at The Dunn's Corners Community Church. Friends and family are invited to attend and join the family after the service at 28 Canyon Drive, Westerly R.I. Donations in Mary Lou's memory may be made to The Westerly Public Library 44 Broad Street Westerly, R.I., 02891.

So many memories of Marylou - "Mrs. Walters" and Susan and Raeann. Playing at her house eating dinner over there at a fold down table in the kitchen. As I recall we had tomato soup with noodles of some kind that was great. I hope Susan you are doing well - my dear childhood best friend. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.

Dear Susan and Raeann,

My deepest sympathies to you both for your loss. Mary Lou was a special lady. Many fond memories from our days being neighbors.

I remember after years of having a deck at the back of the house, my folks decided to turn it into a screened-in porch. It really was quite nice to have. Well, Christmas was coming. My mom loved the holidays, especially Christmas. So, my dad and I were sent off on the errand of getting a Christmas tree, no, we were sent to get Christmas trees. We get to the Christmas tree stand and we pick one out for the living room, then a really large one for the new back porch, then we get one for the front porch. The guy at the stand thought we were done, but we still needed half a tree. He had the perfect one. The front was perfect, and the back was, well, gone. My dad pays for our 3 full trees and we get the half of a tree as a bonus and a laugh. That half a tree was put in the hallway, up against the wall. It was nothing less than perfect. That year we had the most festive home I have ever seen south of the North Pole. I will always miss both my mom and dad, and think of them at least once every single day. I am comforted to know they are now together for all of eternity.
