Alexander (Ander) Michael Thompson, 32, of Hettinger, North Dakota, passed away at his home in Denver, Colorado, on April 16, 2025. Ander was born September 1, 1992, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to Alexander (Alex) Thompson and Kathleen (Wieland) Thompson. After Alex and Kathleen finished their master's degrees, the three set off for an adventure in Florida where they lived until Ander was three years old. The family then moved to Hettinger, North Dakota. In 1997, his sister Elizabeth (Lizzy) Thompson was born and their family was complete.
After settling in Hettinger, Ander made many of his lifelong friends. Countless hours were spent outdoors riding bike, swimming, in "the dirt side", the treehouse, the basketball court, T-ball, Mirror Lake Park and "Tickle Monster". The Kilwein and the Kristy girls were always there to keep Ander in line.
In high school, Ander had accomplishments in many areas. He was an exceptional musician, both on the trumpet in band, as well as in choir, as a second bass. He participated in most sports including football as quarterback, and basketball where he showcased a perfect shot as well as strong defense. Ander worked hard every summer at construction jobs. The summer before his senior year, he was selected for a national choir and sang in amazing venues throughout Europe. It was an experience that he thoroughly enjoyed. He learned to play the guitar by playing Guitar Hero and watching YouTube. His involvement in FBLA sparked an interest in business that continued throughout his life. He graduated from Hettinger High School in 2011.
Ander earned his Bachelor's of Science in Accounting and Finance from Colorado State University in 2015. Math was always his strong suit. Driving from Florida to North Dakota at three years old, he would ask his parents for three-digit addition and subtraction problems to pass the time. Ander was involved in the Colorado State Finance Club, the CSU Business Mentoring Program, and was president of the CSU Summit fund.
Ander's first job was in New York City at a Wall Street investment bank, Credit Suisse, where he worked for several years. Following this, he moved back to Denver and worked for Ibotta and then JP Morgan Wealth Management.
Ander was kind and intelligent with a sharp wit. His dimpled grin was loved by all. He had a deep passion for the outdoors and music. Ander summited several 14'ers with his roommate Erik during his time in Colorado. He was known for bringing the life to any party and loving live music, spending time at Red Rocks amphitheater was his sanctuary.
When something peaked Ander's interest, there was no stopping him. Beginning with sharks then dinosaurs, fire trucks, Batman, Scooby-Doo, Pokemon, Legos, NBA -- specifically Michael Jordan -- and throughout his life, music. He would exhaust a topic and read or watch videos until he had learned everything there was to know about it. In later years, he became an excellent chef. He was the consummate Grill Master and had recently honed his skills for sourdough bread.
Throughout his childhood the family took many fun trips. Most notably to the out islands of the Bahamas for 2 weeks. There he caught a shark, perfected his casting skills and developed his love for adventure and travel. Most recently, he traveled to Japan, where he enjoyed all the interesting foods and amazing beauty.
Ander had a very large, very loving family beyond Hettinger including those in Riverton, Wyoming and at the farm in Dazey, North Dakota. Many hours of his early years were spent making up stories about sharks, anacondas and Batman while his aunts and uncles patiently listened. Later, time at the farm was spent playing cards and games with his many cousins. In Wyoming, Ander spent his time in the mountains fishing and hiking with family.
Ander adored and admired his sister above all. He often said, "She is the whole package." He was her fiercest advocate in every situation. When they were little, being five years apart, he was mostly concerned that she might break his Legos. As they grew up their bond was deep, unbreakable, incredibly loving and they could count on each other always. His Dad (Alex) taught him all things hunting, fishing and basketball. With his Mom (Kathleen) time was spent cooking, listening to music, and watching Harry Potter.
Ander is preceded in death by his grandparents, John (Jack) Wieland, Margaret (Peggy) Neys Wieland, Alice Dutra Thompson, Richard Thompson, and his uncle, Michael Svilar.
Mourning his loss are his father Alexander (Alex) Thompson, Mother Kathleen Wieland Thompson, sister Elizabeth (Lizzy) Thompson, girlfriend Victoria Kedaitis, many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as extended family and so many close, special friends.
Interment will be scheduled at a later date. Condolences to Ander's family can be sent through our website at
