Albert Nickols Obituary

ALBERT JAY NICKOLS Albert (Nick) was born March 3, 1937 in Scotia, CA and passed away on June 3, 2017 in Eureka, CA at the age of 80. Albert was born to Albert & Aileen Nickols and was the second oldest of four children. He attended local schools and graduated from Eureka High School in 1956. After graduation he went to work for Humboldt County Roads Department. In 1960, Albert was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years' active duty and four years in the reserves, one he spent in Chinon, France. After being discharged, he returned to work for the County Roads Department and retired after 38 years of service. On June 18, 1961, he married Barbara Gonsalves and they had three sons. Albert was a family man and enjoyed spending time with them. He was also passionate about spending time at their cabin at Ruth Lake; enjoying hunting, fishing, horseback riding and relaxing. You could also always find Albert and the family at many of the local rodeos, where he enjoyed hanging out at the bucking shoots. Albert volunteered for 55 years with the Humboldt County Sheriffs Mounted Posse Search & Rescue; and was active in the Back Country Horseman's Association. Albert is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara; his sons, Russell and wife Tahnya, Joseph and wife Melinda, Michael and wife Debbie, his grandchildren, Jessyca, Marissa, Zack (Kaitlin), Luke (Amber), Andrew, Garrett, Dustin and Halee, his great-granddaughters, Taylor and Emily. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren, Nathan, Dylan, Josh, Wade, and William and great-grandson, Huxley. Albert also leaves behind his sister Vivian (Tom) Christian, brother Bill Nickols, brother-in-law Bill (Kay) Gonsalves, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jim Nickols, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph & Eva Gonsalves, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law John & Susan Gonsalves. Services will be held Saturday June 10th at 11:30 am at Sacred Heart Parish (Myrtle Avenue, Eureka), a get together will follow at St. Bernard Parish Hall (H Street, Eureka). We would like to give special thanks to the staff at Granada Rehab & Wellness Center and Dr. Han, for their care and support. Please sign the guestbook online at www.times-standard.com

I'm so sorry to all the Nickols family. Al always was kind and generous to me as a young Ag teacher and as a friend!! I'm sorry to have missed the services, I was attending another service and didn't realize it was at the same time. His memory and stories will be with you forever! Again I'm so sorry for your loss. My condolences to Family and Friends of Albert. I met him the mid 50s when we cruised 5th street when it was still 2 ways and we hung out at Morrows, Debs and the Fresh Freeze. I saw him often driving the County truck through Eureka and always got a wave from him...

Barbara, so sorry to hear about the passing of Little Albert, as we often called him. He was a great man and good friend to all. I remember my mother, Alta Fulton Foster, talking about him working for her dad on the ranch at Kneeland. May God bless you all.

Albert was always a special friend...easy going and easy talking man who seemed to like everyone, just like his parents did. I am really having trouble absorbing all of this. But we are so happy we had a little time a few months ago to talk to Albert. Strange thing is just a couple of nights ago I was talking to his son on the phone and when finished I told my wife that it was just like I was talking to Albert...same talk at the same speed, and sounded just like Al when he was younger! I will forever miss him!
I will call you soon, Barbara, and bless you and ALL of your family.
Rest in peace, Albert Nickols

I enjoyed being around Al at our outings with the Sheriffs Posse and our meeting and dinners. I will truly miss Al. It just breaks my heart to hear about his passing. I thank God for being able to be with Al the times we had together. Thank you Al for your service to our Country and to the Humboldt County Sheriff Posse!
