Alice Whitson Obituary

Alice Louise Stockhoff Whitson died August 9, 2014 at the age of 82 at Frye's Care Home where she spent her last years. Alice was born to Ivan and Cynthia Stockhoff in the "old" St. Joseph Hospital on November 4, 1931. She grew up in Eureka and moved to Willow Creek after her marriage to Charles Whitson, where they established "Whitson Plumbing" and built their home. She earned her BA from Humboldt State University and her MBA from San Francisco State. Alice began her teaching career in 1953. She started at Trinity Valley Elementary school, taught briefly at Blue Lake Elementary and then returned to Trinity Valley where she taught until she retired in June 1991. She was listed in the "Who's who of American women educators" and belonged to many groups that were devoted to raising the standards in education for children everywhere. Her passions were teaching, dogs (she rescued many and especially loved Saint Bernards), music, traveling (all over the world), reading and gardening. After moving to Frye's Care Home, visits by her great grand niece, Kennadi Comer, were the highlights of her life, and Kennadi will miss her visits with "Auntie Alice." She also enjoyed frequent visits from her cousins Janet West and Georjean Corsetti who always brought flowers to her. She is survived by er sister-in-law, Joan Stockhoff, her nieces: Karen (Werner) Bietz, Ellen (Tom) Jackson, Anne (Will) Mobley, her grand nieces: Lacey (Jackson) Comer, Angela (Langer) Clark, her grand nephews: Justin Langer, Nathan Bietz, Daniel Bietz and Dylan Bietz, also, numerous great grand nieces and nephews and cousins as well as special friends, Beverly and Harold Westman and Ruth McCardie. She was predeceased by her husband Charles Whitson, her father Ivan Stockhoff, her mother Cynthia Stockhoff and her grand nephew, Dustin Jackson. She was an inveterate donator to many and various charities and would like donations to the charity of your choice. Her ashes will be scattered to join her husband's at their home place in Willow Creek. A memorial will be held in September and a notice will be posted in the Times Standard listing the time and place. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com and click on obits.

I deserved every one of my trips down to visit Mr. Torreson. I have fond memories of this great teacher and it was always a treat to see Mrs. Whitson and her two dogs across the river. My condolences to the family.

Thank-you Mrs. Whitson for your patience in a room full of 5-6 year olds. You were my favorite teacher.

My condolences to the family. Mrs. Witson was my 3rd grade teacher. Just yesterday I was sharing a story of her & I with my colleagues. My first day of 3rd grade I sat outside her classroom door for popping my gum (I was not alone, there were 3 or 4 other students for reasons I do not recall). I chuckle telling this story because I had never been sent from class and at the time could not believe it! I think I sat my whole first week of 3rd grade outside (I was a bit hard headed and I did love popping my gum)! Eventually I figured it out and we got along just fine! I was very fond of her and always think of her when a "teacher memory" is brought up! Again, my condolences. Rest well Mrs. Witson.
