Betsy Ross, born Mary Elizabeth Ross, December 7, 1949 - July 31, 2004, Beloved Sister, Aunt and Great-aunt.
Her sweetness, love, intelligence and beauty will be greatly missed.
Betsy was fourth generation Humboldt County. In the mid ‘60s, as a teenager, she was known as a beautiful girl who drove around in a black Stingray Corvette, who had lots of friends she loved to party with. She attended Humboldt State University. Her first great love was Steve Jacobs, and they always had a special place in each other’s hearts. She later married Denny Filkins for a few years.
Betsy lived and sold real estate in Palm Springs. She loved the desert as well as Humboldt County. She was an incredible chef. She loved to dine out and enjoyed swimming. She loved to visit with her friends and eat good food and drink good wine.
She is survived by her stepfather, William D. Montapert; sister, Nancy Ross Powers; two nieces, Shannon Ross Bearden and Simone Ross Powers; and great-nephew, Austin Samuel Bearden, whom she loved to teach to cook.
Her parents passed away before her, Marilyn Jane Henry Ross Montapert and Harold E. Ross.
Betsy was dearly loved and will be dearly missed.
To celebrate Betsy and Marilyn’s lives, there will be a memorial in Eureka on Saturday, August 14, 2004, from 1 to 4 p.m. A memorial will also be held in Palm Springs on August 16, 2004. Please call Nancy for more information, 707-822-2152.

To the family of Betsy Ross,
I never met Betsy but know of your family through my late aunt, Blythe Nicol. I was saddened by the death of Mrs. Montapert and now Betsy is gone all too soon. My aunt treasured the many years of friendship and kindness your family showed her. My condolences go out to all of you.

Nancy, I have wonderful pictures of Betsy at my birthday parties. Your mother and sister were gracious as well as beautiful.I did not know that your mother had passed away. Betsy was a fabulous cook at 13.
I remember the wedding shower my mom put on for Betsy.
I am sad to think she is no longer with us.

Nancy--
I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your sister, Betsy. I spent the night at your house when we were in high school, your sister was getting married soon and there were presents everywhere. She was so excited about the prospect of opening all of them! I also remember her driving around in her Corvette, beautiful and sassy.
May you find comfort in her memory and knowing others are holding you in prayer.

Nancy, it's been a long time since I saw you or Betsy, but I have many fond memories (certainly of her and the Corvette) you and the rest of the gang all riding our horses, and your dear mother. I was too young to know your father. I am so sorry to hear about your sister and send my sympathy (as well as for your mother). I remember attending Betsy's bridal shower- was it at Baywood? We send our love and hugs of encouragement to you and family members- sincerely, Jan Nash Hunt and Howdy Hunt

Nancy,
I was saddened to hear of Betsy's passing. I had been thinking of her just the day before I read the obituary. My daughter Emily is now living in my grandmother's old place across the back fence from your E Street house, and I was telling her stories about playing with Betsy when I was very young. She was my first friend other than my brother, and I have many fond memories of her. I last saw her a few years ago, just by chance, and we had a nice chat. She was truly a beautiful person. My thoughts are with you and your family.
