Charles Wolfe Obituary

Charles (Charlie) Henry Wolfe passed away in the Granada Care Center in Eureka, on Monday, June 23, 2003, at age 83.

He was born in Ewen, Michigan, February 19, 1920, to the late Joseph and Bernadette Wolfe.

On October 24, 1956, in Reno, Nevada, Charlie married Opal Newman, who preceded him in death in 1999.

After Charlie served honorably in the United States Army in the European Theatre of World War II, he moved west from his Michigan birth place for the work he loved, logging. He met Opal while working in Oregon, and in the late 1950’s, moved to where he is best known and is remembered, Petrolia, California.

For thirty-odd years, Charlie worked for his friend, Harold “Herkey” Lawrence and later joined with Herky’s son, Frank, in creating W & L Logging.

When retirement age came to Charlie, he was not one to be without something to do and spent his final working years helping his good friend Paul Bareilles with his logging ventures. Charile regarded Paul as one of his greatest friends who was always there for him.

Charlie was known to all his family and many friends as the most helpful, understanding, and just plain easygoing guy in the world. Not a man to speak ill of others and always ready to lend a hand with his uncanny mechanical abilities; he could fix just about anything.

There is little doubt that Charlie’s greatest love was spending time in the outdoors, or having a beer with his buddies, and the highlights of his year being deer season.

Charlie wanted to thank Evelen Wright for many years of friendship and place to keep his trailer, Mike Maschmeier and family for friendship and looking in on him, Steve Higdon for keeping in touch and for their conversations about the old logging days, and finally a special thanks to Jim and Colleen Clark, and Sterling and Cindy McWharter, along with the whole McWharter family for their friendship and providing him wonderful places to hunt and look out over the pretty scenery. Charlie wished to say thanks to all his friends for so many great memories.

Surviving Charlie is his brother, James Wolfe (Shorty) and wife Charlotte of Ewen, Michigan; sister, Edith of Superior, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews, step children, and grandchildren; and other relatives and close friends.

In addition to his wife, Opal, and his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by brothers, Gaspard, Joseph, George, Oscar, Henry, Peter; and sisters, Ida, Louise, and Catherine.

A memorial celebration of Charlie’s life will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the Mattole Grange at 2:30 p.m. Friends are welcome to attend this potluck goodbye to our great friend Charlie

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Ferns - Cooper Mortuary.
