Donald Mizer Obituary

Donald Paul Mizer

Donald Paul Mizer died suddenly and peacefully in his home on Good Friday, April 14, 2006, at the age of 58, leaving behind many who loved him dearly.

Don is most remembered for his love of conversation and his amazing ability to recall events of the past. He loved to talk on the phone, and would often call up old friends out of the blue just to keep in touch. As a result, many often said he was a walking encyclopedia on the Class of 66’.

Born in Smith Center, Kansas, on April 2, 1948, he moved with his family at an early age to Ferndale, CA, and was a life-long resident of Humboldt County. Don graduated from Eureka Senior High School in 1966 and he was a graduate of College of the Redwoods. He was veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and he was very proud of his service to his country.

His family and close friends were the center of his world. He loved to tell jokes and he was never without a smile. An outdoorsman, Don loved hunting and spent much of his time during deer season traveling back and forth from Eureka to Dinsmore. An avid reader, he had read nearly every western novel written by Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour. Likewise, he knew every television episode of ‘Gunsmoke,’ and ‘Bonanza’ by heart.

During the last five years of his life, Don’s greatest joy was his time spent conversing with his customers at the Sky Dive-In restaurant. Located at the Murray Field Airport, it was a constant source of stimulation for him, where he was able to connect with acquaintances, old friends, as well as new people from around the country. Don’s gift for gab often inspired everyone in the restaurant to erupt into spontaneous discussions.

He was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Fred Mizer; his mother, Opal Mizer; and his father, Paige Mizer.

He is survived by his partner in life, Sandy Caudle; his children, Anjulissa Wolff and her husband Hodd Wolff of Eureka, his daughter Chrissy Mizer of Hanford, CA, and his son Shane Mizer and his wife Diana Nunes Mizer of Eureka; grandchildren, Samantha Church, SuZanna Church, Haylee Wolff, Lilia Mizer, and Josephine Mizer; his brother, Mike Mizer of St. Louis, MO, and his sister, Pat Schmidt of Eureka; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A graveside service will be held at Ocean View Cemetery on Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at 1:00 P.M. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately after the service at Campton House Inn, 305 M Street, Eureka, California.

Arrangements are under the care of Sanders Funeral Home.

Sandy, Anjie, Chrissy, Shane & Families - What can we say about 'ole Donn' but how much we will miss his caring ways, laughing smile (sometimes at himself :-) and all the memories he made sure we didn't forget. Gary and I were so lucky to have been such long lasting friends of Donn's and of your wonderfully special family. The service was beautiful and just how Donn would have wanted it, we are so proud of all of you, just as he was. Sandy, he was lucky to have you in his life these last 20 years, thank you for 'taking care of our buddy'! Call us now and then like Donn used to and guess you'll have to learn the computer to keep up his stream of emails. Kids, you are great kids and your Dad loved you and the grandkids so much. You all were such a bright light in his life. Debbie, our thoughts are also with you. What a loss for all of us and gee, the class reunion will never be the same now without Donn, he was so looking forward to it. We love you all. Gary & Lynn

To all of Don's Family

What a shock it was to me when Lynn Cunningham called to tell me of Don's passing. I was unable to attend the service for Don as I had mandatory meetings to attend. I will always remember the great times we had together even when we enlisted in the Marines under the buddy plan. Cheryl and I will miss Don's phone calls keeping us up to date on the latest news about the class of 66. His kind ways great laugh and wonderful sence of humor will always be remembered. Randee, Jim and Don are probably having a great time together talking about the class of 66. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time. Don will live in many of our hearts forever.

Sandi and Family: My husband and I were out of town and just heard about Donn. Donn and I have been friends for years and until recently when our computer servers wouldn't communicate, have emailed jokes and news to each other. Donn has always been one of my favorite people with his quick wit and giving, kind nature. I will miss him terribly. I just know he and our friend, Randee, are up in heaven laughing and having a great time. My deepest sympathy for your great loss, Sandi.

Dear Sandy,

I am so sorry to hear about Don's passing over. He was a great guy and always fun to talk to. I'll miss seeing him and visiting with him and laughing with him. I'm sure that he's looking down on you and the girls right now and having a good chat with the Big Guy in charge and making sure you and the girls will be watched over.
