Janice Josephine McGinnis

made her journey to eternal life surrounded by her children and loved ones on August 13, 2012. She was born on May 12, 1946 in Fortuna, CA. She grew up in the Humboldt County area most of her life. Janice attended Toddy Thomas Elementary as well as taking college courses at American River and DQ University in the Sacramento area. Janice was a savvy business woman owning and running with her husband Dakota a taxi cab company in Hayward and later D&J mini mart in Sacramento. Janice was a proud native woman. She loved her beautiful children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much; they were her world. She loved watching her children play sports and was very active in coaching and organizing the teams. She was an SF Giant's and 49er fan and of course her NASCAR driver number 24 Jeff Gordon. We would go on family camping trips and she loved the river. She was happiest when she was with her family. She was a proud member of the Bear River Band. She worked tirelessly for her tribe for over twenty years to help create a brighter future for her family and her people. Janice held several council positions as well as being the enrollment/roads coordinator for Bear River. Janice was deeply saddened in the year 2000 with the loss of her husband Dakota McGinnis Sr. They shared years of love and laughter together. Janice was very fortunate to spend the last ten years of her life with Walter Jackson where they enjoyed watching NASCAR and going camping. They built a life together and were very happy. Janice was preceded in death by her parent's Joseph and Margaret Bowie and her husband Dakota McGinnis Sr, her brother's Victor Billy and Gary Bowie, her sister's Andr‚a Horn and Marian Bowie, her daughter Delilah Carpenter, her grandson Christopher McGinnis and granddaughter Crystal Carpenter, her nephews Leslie and Bobbie Bowie, and her niece's Jamie Morales and Elizabeth Smiling. Janice is survived by, her longtime companion Walter Jackson her children Tina Carpenter, Deborah Layton, Dakota McGinnis Jr and wife Lisa, Joseph McGinnis and wife Nicole, Margaret McGinnis and fianc‚ Miguel Trujillo, John McGinnis and Wife Teresa, James McGinnis, Stephanie Castleberry. Numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved Grand children and Great Grandchildren. Sister's Aileen Bowie-Meyer, Norma and Ivan Carter, Brenda Bowie, Eloise Bowie, Brother Duane Bowie Sr. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. at Gobles Fortuna Mortuary, 560 12th Street, Fortuna, CA.
