Jay Hames Obituary

"Jay Bird" Passed tragically at the age of 49 while on vacation with friends, born December 07, 1941 in Arcata Ca. to Sandy George and Delbert Hames. "Jay Bird" was preceded in death by his father Delbert L Hames and sister Connie Hames both of Blue Lake Ca. After graduating from Arcata High School Jay joined the beloved Marine Corps for six years, he then married Chris Young and together they had a daughter Brook Hames. Jay Bird was a very fun loving man who loved his family and friends. Jay's many hobbies included motorcycles, boating, tree felling, sky diving, water skiing, in short if it was dangerous or competitive he liked it. Jay was survived by his mother Sandy, sister Chris George, daughter Brooke, and nephew Dell Vaughn, Jay is also survived by many friends and co-workers in which he cared for and respected dearly. Jay Bird was a hard worker, true friend, and devoted father. Jay was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click obits.

My dear friend Jay,I can hardly still beleive that you are not here.It was great to reconnect with you after being gone from California for the last 28 years. You were always true to what the word "friend" meant because when I saw you and Sandy at the house it was just like old times with no seperation.I Have so many great memories of fun times we spent together "back in the day in true Blue Lake style" that will always bring a smile to my face.Their was nothing you would not do for a friend or neighbor.I considered you one of my best friends for over 35 years.I love you and miss you but we will see each other again.Sandy,Crystal,Brooke my heart goes out to you but take some comfort in the fact that Jay was one of nicest, warm hearted"True"people you could ever want to call your Son,Brother,Father,Friend.

Sandy, Brooke, and Crystal ~

We are devastated at the loss of one of our best friends JayBird. We are even more devestated that we cannot be there at this time. The last time we talked to him, he was just going into the movies, and we didn't get to chat very long. We understand that he died a hero, and that's just exactly who he was. Please take comfort in the fact that there's no doubt that he had no fear - cause that's who he was too. We love you JayBird.

About three years ago Jay helped me take down a cedar tree that had become a hazard next to our house. Its been a few months since I talked to Jay but we had plans on taking down two more potentially hazardous trees some time this winter or spring. After thinking about Jay and looking at those trees the last couple of days I think I'll let those trees be.... at least until a limb falls on my head and I know that Jay got another good laugh in, at my expense. After reading all the other entries its comforting to know that so many others knew Jay the way I did. Jay was honestly one in a million. I've always respected and admired Jay and always will. Sandy,Crystal, and Brooke if there is anything we can do please call on us. Aaron & Daria Hooven

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jay's family. I went to USMC Bootcamp with Jay in 1980. I hadn't met Jay until we were on the bus and on the way. I soon learned Jay had a lot of guts and heart. He nearly didn't make it through bootcamp due to his bum knee sometimes giving out while marching or running, but he would always quickly get back to his feet and keep going. The D.I.'s really liked his "can do" attitude and over looked the bad knee situation. I really liked Jay and, although I only saw him once or twice since I got out of the Marine Corps, I'll regret not having looked him up more and will miss him.
Prayers and God Bless

Sandy, Chrystal, and Brooke. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I know how proud you were of Jay and the way he turned his life around. We were very proud of him too. Jay was always one of the friendliest people I knew. He always had a smile and a good word when you saw him. Sandy my heart breaks for you. If you need me I will be there. We love you Sandy, and we will keep you in our prayers. Remember the good times.
