Jon Schmitz died unexpectedly on May 11, 2005, at the age of 37, ending 20 year battle to find the right medication for his brain chemistry. The exact cause of death is yet to be determined.
Jon was born in Carmichael, CA, on November 2, 1967, and moved to Humboldt County in 1977 with his family. He graduated from high school in Mendocino County with an extensive emphasis in Computer Technology. His love for automobiles led him into the field of mechanics, and he worked for Hubbard’s German Auto Inc. for several years.
Jon was an avid collector of things that he loved. He built remote control cars and he also collected and restored vintage skateboards and snowboards. His family continues to feel his presence in the midst of his cherished collections and the memories that those items help to recall.
Jon was preceded in death by his father, Larry Schmitz, who died on May 30, 1980, and an infant daughter, Trinity, who died in April, 1995.
He is survived by his loving cat companion, Girl; his mother, Virginia Schmitz of Eureka; his brother, Jim Schmitz of Atherton, CA; his sister, Tabatha Schmitz of Eureka; his son, Trevor of Eureka; and sons, Cameron and Conner of Sacramento, CA.
Funeral services will be held at First Covenant Church, 2526 J Street, Eureka, on Saturday, May 21, 2005, at 1:30 P.M.; Pastor Rick McRostie will officiate. Jon’s final resting place will be in the family cemetery in Trinity County near his father’s remains and those of generations that preceded him.
Memorial contributions may be made to the local chapter of NAMI, The Nation’s Voice on Mental Illness, P.O. Box 1225, Eureka 99502 or to CASA of Humboldt, 2356 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, CA 95501.

I am so sorry to hear of Jon's death. He and I knew each other shortly after his father died. His grief was profound and he was searching for peace. To my knowledge, Jon never found peace, but kept searching for answers to his life's dilemmas and his desire to run from things. I like Jon very much and will think of him often.
