Lanore Cady Obituary

May 23, 1921- February 3, 2011 Lanore passed away in her sleep at home in her beloved Scotland, Indiana. Lanore was born in Owensburg, IN. Her family moved to Burns City where she attended High School and then settled permanently on a beautiful farm in Scotland. Lanore attended the University of Indiana until she joined the United States Navy in 1942 at the beginning of WW II. She was an Aviation Machinist Mate Second Class, at NAS Livermore when she met her future husband Lt. James Cady. They would remain happily married for 50 years. After the war they lived in Arcata, California where Lanore graduated with honors from Humboldt State University while raising their two sons. She began an art career that would eventually lead to her becoming an extraordinary artist, world renowned calligrapher, noted author, poet, and inspiring educator. She developed a style of combining pen and ink watercolors, calligraphy, and poetry that was unsurpassed. Her renowned book "Houses and Letters" was published in 1977. Lanore was very active in the community on both a local and state level. She started the "Save the Victorians" movement in Northern California and was responsible for the eventual renovation of many Victorian style houses. She founded and operated both the Candy Stick Studio, and the Ingomar art galleries. Lanore designed projects for the State Capitol and served as Director for the Humboldt Arts Council. Lanore truly enjoyed educating and inspiring people. She taught Art and Calligraphy from grade school thru College. She was awarded Lifetime Teaching Credentials in both Art Education and Community College Fine Arts. When her husband retired in 1980 they moved back to Scotland. She quickly became part of the community where her enthusiasm and work ethic was so inspiring. She tirelessly worked for the Shawnee Theatre and many other local organizations. For 20 years she held free summer art classes for the children of Greene County at her Brick Star Studio. Her art career flourished and she was proud to be the Fine Arts judge for the Indiana State Fair for 10 years. Upon her husband's passing in 1992, Lanore retired and fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling the world. She was able to visit the great art centers in England, France, Turkey, Egypt, China and others. She deeply enjoyed her affiliation with the local Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 9297 and was their first woman lifetime member. She was also a proud member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts; Society for Scribes and Illuminators, London; Friends of Calligraphy, San Francisco; Board of Directors, Shawnee Theatre; Scotland Historical Society; US Navy Waves Association, and many others. In 2001 Lanore was selected as Distinguished Alumni of the Year for Humboldt State University. Truly a Renaissance Woman, not even the onset of Alzheimer's could dim her spirit or her smile. Lanore is survived by her sister Nina Mulay, her sons, Bill and John Cady, and her Grandson, Peter. She is preceded by her parents Luther and Iva Corbin, her siblings Albert and Verna Mae, and her loving husband, Jim Cady. Her Service will be at Jenkins Mortuary in Bloomfield, IN at 12 pm on Saturday February 12, 2011 with the Reverend Brent Meyer presiding. Friends and family will gather at 11:00 A.M. The family wishes any donations be made in Lanore's name to the Bloomfield High School Art Department or the Alzheimer's Association. I have never met Lanore, but recently acquired on of her original works of calligraphic art. I am an artist and designer, which is why I can appreciate the artistic mastery in her work. What a gifted artist she was, and no doubt a beautiful person as well! I am so sorry to all of you who knew her, loved her and have had to go on without her. As an avid art collecter and art dealer, I always like to give immediate family members of an artist the chance to acquire their work first, before I offer it to other collectors. If you are Bill or John Cady and are seeing this message, please reach out to me! Carolyn Toshach, [email protected]

Dear Bill and John, Auntie Skip and Uncle Jim were a wonderful part of our family as were you and John. Your mom was my first babysitter and closer than any blood relative. She was an amazing example for many young women in our community. She really "did it all". I have her portrait of me ,at 3 ,on my wall to this day. Love Heid

John,

I was sorry to hear about your mom.

She leaves you many found memories, and I know how you charished your time with her. You were fortunate to be able to spend the past few years with her.

The book you gave me (for the granddaughters) just before you left Fortuna, is in a special place in my family room. She was a very talented lady.

As always, the very best to you and Bill.

Dear John & Bill
Your folks were great inspiration for us Arcata kids. I think of your Dad so tall with a perpetual twinkle in his eye and as a high schooler discovering my own artistic talent with which I make my living, your Mom was a remarkable mentor. In my parent's home in Fieldbrook we have one of the original pen/ink/watercolor pieces she did of an alley scene in Arcata. It is fabulous.

John, I know these past years with your Mom's illness have been hard. I hope she left the chains of that awful disease behind and her mind is now free. I feel honored to have known them.

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Cady's passing. She was my calligraphy Professor at CR. She was filling in for the Art Prof who was on Sabatical. I will never forget her enthusiasm and excitement in teaching. She was a true teacher and mentor.
RIP Lanore.

Dear Bill and John,
Thank you for sharing your mom, my Godmother, with our family for all of these years. I have missed her greatly and treasure the calligraphy of "splendor in the grass" that she made for me for my high school graduation.
I have been thinking of her so much these last years but couldn't find her/you. She is the last of that generation that had those crazy parties, camping in the Redwoods and the great times your Dad & Mom had in Arcata. Your dad took great care of me in high school when a boy maligned my honor. I miss your folks and mine. All my love Holly Hunt

Bill and John ("The Little Dude"), As you well know, your Mom was a treasure. Rich has many years of memories of you, your Mom & your Dad, "Spider Monkey" (your Dad's nick-name with many of his high school students). She gave us a precious gift, a framed (origninal)Personalized Calligraphy on our wedding day 12/21/75. It was put up on our wall at that time and it remains there. We smile every time we look at it. We will remember her positive outlook & artistic talent. She will forever have a place in our hearts.

Bill and John- Your mother was a truly remarkable lady and gifted artist. Many years have passed since those 625 Bayside days in 1965 and my good fortune to have met the Cady family. Please give me a call if you're ever out in Humboldt- Gordon Van Zee

While I have bits and pieces of childhood memories, my main recollection of Lanore was my last visit back to see my mother, Betty Read. We saw much of her art and photos while there. Mom and Lanore chatted reminiscing of past years of singing harmony and growing up Corbin. Lanore's enthusiasm towards life was so contagious it was impossible not to have a smile on my face and as I write and think back upon that time I find the smile is still there. - Scott Read
