Steve Luttig Obituary

Steve Luttig Richard Steven Luttig, known as "Steve" to his many friends, was born in Sacramento in 1948, to Richard and Virginia Luttig. Steve passed from this world on Nov. 10, three days before his 64th birthday. He spent his childhood in Sacramento, before moving with his parents and little brother Michael, to Lake Tahoe, where the family spent ten happy years. Steve began working in the restaurant business at the age of 16. After the family returned to Elk Grove in the Sacramento area, Steve joined the Army, where he used his culinary skills planning and supervising meal preparation for the troops. After his discharge, he worked at swanky restaurants in the Sacramento area, and frequently served meals to Governor Jerry Brown, then in his first term. Attracted by the pristine beauty of Humboldt, Steve moved here in 1983, and never went back. He soon met his soul mate, Curtis Clark of Westhaven, and they entered into a committed lifetime relationship of love, work, and sharing. Steve worked for the Larrupin Restaurant in Trinidad for many years, before declining health forced him to leave the workplace. He spent his time creating art, advocating for other sick and disabled people, and served as his partner's inspiration for Abalone Cove, a seaside retreat. Steve was one of the brave initial pioneers who got NORCAP started in the 1980's. He also served many years on the Patient Advisory Committee and the Quality of Care Standards Committee for the Open Door Community Clinic. His friends knew him as a loving, generous, and deeply spiritual person, and those who worked with him, whether professionally or as volunteers, knew him as committed, tireless, and rock-solid. He will be greatly missed. A celebration of Steve's life will be held in Westhaven after the New Year. Watch this paper for the announcement.
