Theodore Allen "Ted" Duey

Theodore Duey Obituary

was born on November 17, 1951 in Washington State, and tragically passed away on Saturday March 31, 2012 near Swimmers Delight on Highway 36 in Carlotta California. Ted was driving his wife and soul mate JoAnn home to their ranch when they were unexpectedly struck by the top of a falling tree. Ted was the son of William and Beatrice Duey. Ted married JoAnn Marie Johnson on July 27, 1973, they worked side by side for nearly forty years and were rarely out of each other's sight. Ted and JoAnn purchased Martin and Shirley's Grocery from JoAnn's mother Shirley Johnson in 1986 and operated it together until 2008. Since 2008 the couple worked their ranch together and enjoyed spending their days together and taking small trips to Montana and Reno, Nevada. Ted and JoAnn had three children: Clint born in 1975 and twins Sabrina and Deakon born in 1978. Ted was a wonderful and involved father traveling thousands of miles to attend his children's sporting events, his face and voice was a constant fixture in the stands cheering on his kids. Ted and JoAnn took time out of their busy lives to coach hundreds of other Humboldt County kids in baseball and football. He stressed the importance of hard work, education, and being a good person to his children and was very proud that all of his kids graduated from college, and now have wonderful families of their own. Ted was blessed with seven grandchildren who were truly the light of his life, and true to form, he spent his last day watching one of his grandsons wrestle, and visiting with his mother and mother in law. Ted was a kind, giving, hard working person who would do anything for anyone and his presence improved the lives of countless people throughout his community. Ted was a jack of all trades and people constantly came to him for advice on everything from construction to advice on life in general. Ted is survived by his loving wife JoAnn Duey, his three children and their spouses Clint and Emily Duey, Sabrina and Sam Lumpkin, Deakon and Melissa Duey, and all of his seven grandchildren Haylee, Alex, and Christopher Duey, Emmitt and Theodore Samuel Lumpkin, and Claire and Jacob Duey. Ted is also survived by his Mother Beatrice Duey, brothers Dennis and Lee Duey and his sister Marlene Elliot; he is also survived by his mother in law Shirley Johnson and his wife's brothers and sisters who Ted helped mentor through life following the passing of their father Martin Johnson in 1972. Ted's family would like to thank all of the people who tried to help him on that tragic night and to all of those people who have showed their concern for JoAnn. A celebration of Ted's life will be held on Friday April 13, 2012 at the Carlotta Grange at five pm. Arrangements are under the care of Goble's Fortuna Mortuary, 560 12th Street, Fortuna, CA 95540, 707-725-2294. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click obits.

Joan, so good to see you out and about. Hope you are doing better. God blesses us as widows with a "numbness" that helps us survice our grief and loss. Leo has been gone over eight years now, and life, of a different kind, does go on...May God Grant you his Joy for the strenght it gives, because the Bible says the "Joy of the Lord IS our strength"!!!

Mrs. Beatrice Duey and family. When I joined the army 1966 and left Humboldt; Ted was a young teenager and around then was last time I saw him. He was athletic and loved playing ball. Bill, Ted, Lee, Ed, Dennis, Marlene and myself grew up down at the end of Painter Street in Rio Dell. When I read of the accident I was stunned and couldn't believe it. In my mind he was still that young teenage boy. But in my absence he grew up to a fine hard working man and parent. And he whole heartedly gave of himself to the community and friends. I send my heart felt sympathy to both the Johnson and Duey families. God Bless Ted and the two families that he brought together. Roger G. Barisdale
