David MacDougall Obituary

NORTHFIELD - David A. MacDougall, 77, died at his home on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018. He was born on June 2, 1940, in Rutland, Vermont, to the late David H. MacDougall and Electa I. (Bass) MacDougall.
David is survived by his wife of 57 years, Christine (Delia), and their sons, Michael and his partner, Katrina McCurdy, Douglas, his wife, Teresa, and his grandsons Conner and Bryce MacDougall, all of Northfield; and special niece Marie Potvin and her partner, Ronni Basis, of Columbus, Ohio. David is also survived by his sisters, Marie MacDougall and Carol MacDougall, both of Barre; and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his sister, Deanna, and brother, Raymond.
Following graduation from Northfield High School in 1958, he attended the University of Vermont. He was employed as a lineman for Northfield Electric Department. In 1965, David and his father purchased College View Dairy and acquired Gage Dairy in 1969. For many years, he also owned M & M Machines, a snowmobile dealership and repair shop. David served in the Vermont National Air Guard for six years.
David was very active in the Northfield community. He was a 55-year member of the DeWitt Clinton Lodge. He founded the Northfield Chapter of the Jaycees where he served as president. He was vice president of District 4. He also served as chairman of many Vermont state Jaycee projects. Dave was a member of the JCI senate. He was former member of Northfield Rotary International Club having held local offices, including chairmanships. He was also an active participant in instructional seminars and workshops for District 785. David served on the Northfield board of selectmen and was town treasurer. He loved Northfield and worked tirelessly for the betterment of his community.
David was a co-founder of the Northfield Snowmobilers Inc. and lifetime member having held many leadership positions. He participated in the VAST annual meetings as the parliamentarian. He was appointed by the late Gov. Richard Snelling to the Governor's Advisory Council on Snowmobiling.
Dave will be remembered for his many talents building and restoring his own homes, helping his sons with theirs and always willing to help friends who might need his expertise. Many young people have benefitted from David's help whether it was working side by side with him in repair and renovation of all things mechanical, or building projects large and small. They learned to follow instructions and the importance of doing the job correctly. David taught the youth snowmobile safety course out in the field behind the dairy. That same field was home to fiercely competitive horseshoe tournaments under the lights.
Despite a busy professional life, Dave enjoyed camping locally and in Maine, wild snowmobile rides with friends all over Vermont. He enjoyed riding his blue Harley-Davidson motorcycle believing you couldn't have too much chrome or too many eagles on a bike. David took great pride in his grandsons and the plans they have chosen for their futures.
Dave was a lifetime member of the Coffee Club "command center" of Northfield.
A celebration of the life of David A. MacDougall will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2018, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the American Legion Post on Depot Square in Northfield.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice Inc., 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641.
Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield is assisting the family with arrangements.

Christine and family,

You have my deep sympathy. Losing a mate has been likened to losing a part of oneself. It will take time to dull that pain. During this grievous time, may you experience the peace that surpasses all understanding to help you cope (Philippians 4:6, 7).

Dave's mother and my mom Polly Maloney were good friends and we grew up with the family in South Northfield. My brother-in-law's grandfather owned Gage Dairy.
