Donald Danforth Obituary

BARRE - Donald Ives Danforth, 64, of 143 Washington St., died peacefully at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, following a courageous battle with cancer. Donald was born Oct. 16, 1946, in Barre, the son of Ives and Freda Shover Danforth. Donald is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Diane Lyford Danforth; his loving children, David and Laurie Danforth, Robin Danforth and Christopher Danforth; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Amanda, Ryan, Amber, Cody, Courtney, Taylor and Destiny; along with his brother, Ronald Danforth of East Corinth; his brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews dear to his heart. A special note of love goes out to his mother-in-law, Nina Lyford, whom he called or visited daily.

Donald had a wide circle of family and friends whom he visited or called frequently. He seldom passed up an opportunity to ride the country roads, attend a state fair or eat at a favorite restaurant. He loved farming and frequently raised his own beef. He owned and operated a lawn care business in Barre for the past 15 years. For many years, he was a welder at Blodgett Oven in Burlington and a fabrication welder in the Fort Worth, Texas, area.

Donald was predeceased by his parents, brother Michael and sister Sandra Danforth.

Donald's life will be celebrated Thursday, Oct. 21, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Church of Chelsea. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea.

Dear Diane,

Working with you at the DDS over a period of time, it was see clear to see the loving relationship you and Don shared. Listening to stories about large family gatherings and the open arms you had for your kids and grandkids. May the memories of the times you’ve been able to share together help you through this difficult time. Thinking of you often. Much love to you and your family.

Uncle Don will be missed by everyone. Although it has been quite a few years since I had seen him, I will always remember the way that he would "pick-on" us kids and how he was the life of our family get-togethers. Rest in peace Uncle Don, I am glad that you are not in pain anymore.

Dear Diane and Family;
The last time I saw Don was at Dunkin Donuts in Barre. His ever present smile and kind words were appreciated by all the lives that Don touched. Never a mention of his illness or pain - just the typical big smile and kind conversation that left a mark with everyone he came into contact with. I will miss Don very much.

Danforth family,
I am sorry to read of your loss. I knew Don through his lawn mowing business. For years he mowed the lawn next to my house and was known to my day care kids as "Lawn Mower Man". The would all line up on the fence and wait for him to stop and say hi. He never failed to make their day. I had many a fine chat with him myself. I missed him this last summer and will continue to do so.
Again, I am sorry.

I miss you already, Uncle Don. You were the life of every party and family get together, and even just a simple visit to Gram's or for that matter, anywhere you went! The Lyford family will not be the same without you and neither will our family gatherings. There will be a silence where you once filled it with some kind of joke or harassment of someone... but I will carry your positive, happy-go-lucky attitude with me the best that I can, you keep Grampa company! All my Love to Aunt Diane and family. Love, Katie

Time will soften the pain that you are feeling now and all the good memories will remain. Remember all the good times and file away the sad times for Don will always be in your hearts. Be thankful for the years that have past and try to look ahead. I am sure that he would want it that way. May he rest in peace.

David and Family,

I know from experience how difficult dealing with loss can be, but I also know how empowering and special it feels to receive the perfect sympathy note from someone in our lives. Words not only hug your heart in a time of loss, they are also powerful and healing. Always remember death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. My thoughts are prayers are with you all.

Much Love,

Donald was dear to the hearts of the Webster family and I am so sorry for your loss. I ran into him frequently in various grocery stores and he always had a smile and said hello. My daughter Katie worked at Quality Market while in high school and she got to know him there. She was very fond of Donald. We will miss him.

Poppi, you were the greatest man that ever set out on this earth to me. You meant alot and was a father figure to all of us grandchildren. You inspired me to be the best I could be and always told me "work hard and you'll get where you need to be". I'm going to miss our heart to heart conversations, when you would tell me everything I need to know to the book of life. You told me it has it's ups and downs but in the end it's all worth it. I'm going to take what you've given me and show you what i'm capable of. I'm going to miss you poppi. You were the fun to the show of every christmas, family dinner and event that was going on. I'm going to smile and look up at you and know your looking down on me and Cody. We love you and are going to miss you.
