MONTPELIER - James E. Davis, 76, of Barre Street, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Lyndonville, Vermont, on Nov. 16, 1938, the son of Percy and Violet (Smith) Davis. He attended schools in Danville, Hardwick and East Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1957.

He enlisted into the Vermont Army National Guard in 1956 and served until his honorable discharge on May 22, 1967.

Jim worked for a number of building and contracting companies in the area for most of his career. At the time of his death he was employed by MFB Construction.

Jim was a member of Outboard Boating Club of America. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing on his boat on Lake Ontario, snowmobiling, traveling with his good friend Walter Baldwin to many car shows to show off his 1957 Plymouth Bel Air and 1987 Monte Carlo SS. He rarely missed any televised NASCAR race and would annually attend Oswego Speedway to watch the supermodifieds. Jim especially enjoyed spending time with his siblings and cherished the time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his children, Shawn Davis, of Callaway, Maryland, Sharon Davis and her husband, Michael Burke, of Bristol, Vermont, and John Audy Jr. and wife Kathleen, of East Montpelier; sisters Alice Nelson, of Lyndonville, Vermont, and Charlotte Tucker, of Burlington, Vermont; brothers Clayton "Butch" Davis, of Montpelier, Lawrence Davis, of Portland, Oregon, and Raymond "Lee" Davis, of Barre Town, Vermont; five grandchildren, Ryan Davis, Ciara Burke, Madison, Collin and Ethan Audy, and many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his father, Percy, and mother, Violet Davis, and sister Elizabeth Hayward.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Guare & Sons/Barber & Lanier Funeral Home.

I didn't know you, Jim...but you raised one amazing daughter who I have been blessed to know for many years. Sharon is a real beauty in this world and, even with the little she shared with me about you a few weeks ago, it seems like you had a lot to do with that. Thank you.
