Louise Avery Obituary

FAIRLEE - Louise Denslow Roberts Avery of Fairlee passed away Friday, July 29, 2011, at the age of 93.

Mrs. Avery was born in New Haven, CT, on February 23, 1918, a daughter of Wilson Burr and Olive Davis Roberts. Her early school years were spent at the New Haven public schools.

She graduated from the House in the Pines School in Norton, Mass., in 1935, and from Middlebury College in 1939. Following her graduation she returned to Middlebury and worked in the office of the Dean of Women at the college.

During this time she met Borden Avery who was employed at the Middlebury Inn, and they were married on October 18, 1941. Mr. Avery died on March 25, 1996. Their entire married life they worked together operating Avery Inns of Vermont, Inc. which was composed of the Norwich Inn, Bonnie Oaks Resort in Fairlee, Montpelier Tavern Hotel in Montpelier, and Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee. Following her husband's death, she remained in Fairlee and assisted her family in the operation of Lake Morey Resort, having sold the other three hotels. She was a member of the Vermont Hotel/Motel Association, New England Inns and Resorts Association, and American Hotel and Motel Association.

Mrs. Avery is predeceased by her son, Allen Avery. She has four grandchildren: Jeffrey and Mark of Fairlee, Jennifer of Montana, and Toby Huggett of Utah/Vermont. She has four great-grandsons: Bodie, Ty, Ezra, and Luke, all of Fairlee. They were all her pride and joy.

A memorial service will be held at the Post Mills Congregational Church in Post Mills, Vermont, this Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 11:30 A.M., with a reception to follow at the Norwich Inn at 1:30 P.M.

If one wishes, memorial gifts may be made to the Borden and Louise Avery Cardiac Fund at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, to the Borden and Louise Avery Scholarship Fund at Middlebury College, or to a charity of one's choice.

Sayles Funeral Home of St. Johnsbury, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Many fond memories of our times together with NEIA, from Resort Committee meetings to Annual meetings. Both Louise and Borden welcomed us new kids to the association and helped guide us.
