WOODSTOCK - Patricia Bixby McHugo died on May 7, 2016, in Woodstock, Vermont, of Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Barre, Vermont, on Jan. 5, 1924, the daughter of Gerald A. and Bertina Hooker Bixby. Pat had two sisters, Geraldine B. Averill, of Barre, and Barbara B. Laing, of Tucson, Arizona.
Pat graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre in 1941 and from Lasell Junior College in Newton, Massachusetts, in 1943. She graduated from the Boston School of Occupational Therapy in 1945, after which she spent a year in Honolulu, Hawaii, as an occupational therapist for injured soldiers. She married John W. McHugo on Sept. 16, 1946, and they raised three children in Burlington, Vermont: Gregory J. McHugo, of Strafford, Vermont, Susan M. Inouye, of Los Angeles, California, and Nancy P. McHugo, of Groton, Vermont. She leaves behind eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pat worked as a laboratory technician in the Departments of Pharmacology and Pathology at the University of Vermont for 22 years. After retiring from UVM in 1977, she divided her time between winters in Tucson and summers in Greensboro, Vermont. Pat moved back to Vermont year-round in 2004.
Pat loved to ski and to play golf. She gave her time and leadership ability to support women's golf at Mountain View Country Club in Greensboro, where she became an honorary lifetime member. She was an avid crafter, and while in Tucson, she enjoyed the camaraderie among the crafters at her church. She was a voracious reader, an ardent bridge player and a devoted cat lover. After her retirement, Pat enjoyed traveling to many destinations around the world. She had very fond memories of growing up in Barre, but she cherished her summers at camp in Greensboro. She was most joyous when reminiscing with her sisters about their escapades as the Bixby girls.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, donations in Pat's name can be made to the Greensboro Free Library (56 Wilson St., Greensboro, VT 05841) or the Greensboro Historical Society (P.O. Box 151, Greensboro, VT 05841).
