Wayne Gilman Obituary

BARRE TOWN - Wayne E. Gilman, 83, a longtime resident of Barre, passed away, with his family by his side, at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington on Friday, Nov. 25, 2016.
Born in Waterbury on July 10, 1933, he was the son of the late Forrest and Margaret (Turner) Gilman. On Aug. 13, 1976, he married the former Sheila A. Lawton in Waterbury.
Wayne was a graduate of Waterbury High School and then went on to continue his education at the University of Vermont. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country during the Korean War. Following his discharge, Wayne was employed by the State of Vermont Agency of Transportation, a career that spanned over 43 years in highway planning. He retired in 1998 and then continued to work as a consultant for AOT.
Wayne's memberships included the American Legion Post #63 in Northfield and the Canadian Club in Barre.
An accomplished rhythm guitar player for many years, Wayne was well-known throughout the central Vermont area playing with his band, the Nashville Dropouts, for weddings, parties and his long-term gig at the St. John's Club in Burlington. In his leisure time, he took great joy in jamming with his friends, was an avid Red Sox fan, a supporter and fan of the UVM men's and women's basketball teams, the local Barre Town baseball teams, and loved watching his sons' athletic events throughout the years, as well as hunting with his boys.
Wayne is loved and mourned by his wife, Sheila Gilman, of Barre Town; his sons Adam Gilman, and his wife, Amanda, of Waitsfield, Jared Gilman, of Barre, Steven Gilman and his wife, Lisa, of East Montpelier, Douglas Gilman, of Williston; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Gilman, of Berlin; Sheila's family, his mother-in-law, Evelyn Lawton, of St. Albans, brother-in-law Gary Lawton and his wife, Rose, of St. Albans, sister-in-law Kellie Jette and her husband, Roger, of St. Albans; his special canine family, Roxie, Darci and Bonnie; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Wayne was predeceased by a sister, Madeline Gilman, and four brothers Kenneth Gilman, Roger Gilman, Albion Gilman and Quentin Gilman.
Memorial services will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at 1 p.m. where friends may call from noon until the hour of the service. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Rowan Court Health and Rehabilitation Center, 378 Prospect St., Barre VT 05641; or to Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre VT 05641.

Some of the best memories of my life are off setting and listening to Wayne, Speedy and Toney playing the tunes I most loved. What I wouldn't give for one of those evenings again!

So sorry to hear of Wayne's (Gil) passing. I use to play in the Nashville Dropouts when it was Ray, Speedy, Gil, and I believe the Drummer's name was Randy. It certainly was a fun group, and we all enjoyed playing and singing. Wayne always had good things to say about people . He was a very nice person.RIP Wayne.
