Robert L. Wertenberger

ROBERT L. WERTENBERGER Robert L. Wertenberger, 94, of Convoy, Ohio, died at 3:55 am on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Van Wert Manor. He was born on December 2, 1929, to Roy and Ruby (Whetstone) Wertenberger. On August 24, 1952, he married the former Louise V. Schwarck. Bob graduated from Lima South High School in 1947. He enlisted into the United States Navy on September 2, 1948, serving honorably until September 16, 1949. He was recalled to active duty in August of 1950 and again, served honorably until being discharged from the United States Navy on August 12, 1952. After his military service, he wasted no time marrying Louise two weeks later and then started attending Ohio Northern University. Bob took classes, non-stop, and graduated with a bachelor's degree on August 6, 1955, finishing a 4-year program in only 3 years. Bob retired from Crestview Local Schools after 36 years of teaching. He started teaching in 1955 at Grover Hill. In 1963, he moved to Crestview and taught until 1969, when he went to Norwell High School. In 1979, Bob came back to teach at Crestview until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of Convoy Methodist Church and the Convoy Lion's Club. He also spent 40 years as Superintendent of the Convoy Water Department. Bob enjoyed retirement traveling with Louise. He is survived by his sons, Tony Wertenberger and Tim Wertenberger; a son-in-law, Jim Rivera; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ruby; his wife, Louise V. Wertenberger; and a daughter, Anne Marie Rivera. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Convoy Methodist Church. Burial, in Convoy I.O.O.F. Cemetery, will take place at a later date.
