Donald Dreyer Obituary

Donald Paul Dreyer D.V.M., age 76, passed away peacefully at his home on December 12, 2019. He was born September 18, 1943, in Rushville, NE to Paul and Blanche (Peterson) Dreyer. Don grew up in Hay Springs, NE on the family farm and graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1961. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Dana College in Blair, NE in 1965 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in Fort Collins in 1969. Don embarked on a lifelong career of caring for animals, always cultivating enduring friendships with their owners and his staff. After working in Denver for 2 years, he came to Longmont and became a partner at the Animal Hospital, where he practiced for 48 years until shortly before his passing. He became a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1971 and served in various capacities over the years. He shared the talent of his beautiful voice in the Chancel Choir and special services. In 1972 Don joined the Rotary Club of Longmont, as he felt strongly in its purpose of providing humanitarian service around the world. He served on their Board, and those of the St. Vrain Music Association, Colorado-Chernobyl Health Alliance, Longmont Humane Society, Longs Peak Veterinary Medical Association, Longmont Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of Colorado and American Veterinary Medical Associations. Throughout his career and partial retirement, Don spent as much time as he could at the family farm and mountain cabin. He was an avid reader, especially books about WWII, history, investing, politics, and he read his many magazines cover to cover. He followed college sports, most especially Nebraska Corn Huskers football. Don and Leslie shared their love of classical music and were longtime supporters of Longmont and Boulder Symphonies. Don had little use for the computer age but being able to check the "ranch rain" numerous times daily brought him great satisfaction. He didn't google, he went straight to his 1988 World Book Encyclopedias. He was passionate about his family farm, planting trees by the thousands, keeping up the paint and repairs and reflecting during long, early morning walks. He was dedicated to honoring the legacies of his forefathers and strove to preserve the fields, farms, streams, and mountains for future generations. Don married Myra Jo Rose on August 31, 1968 in Longmont. They raised their two sons, Jay and Lee in a home full of love, laughter, music, sports, and many adored pets.Myra Jo Rose passed away in a car accident in 2001. Don married Leslie Winship on August 9, 2003 in Longmont. Don will be remembered for his kindness, gentle manner and interest in the lives of everyone he met and knew. His ready smile conveyed an abiding geniality and his handshake, an affirmation of trust. He treated people and animals with respect and compassion. His friends and family know him as a lifelong environmentalist, ardent recycler, and a champion of social consciousness. He leaves a legacy of honesty, humility and hard work for his children and grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents Paul Martin and Blanche Carolyn Dreyer, his wife Myra Jo Rose and his brother-in-law J. Conrad Bauer. Don is survived by his wife, Leslie of Longmont; his son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Kristin Dreyer of Manning, IA; his son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Megan Dreyer of Lincoln, NE; Leslie's children, Krystal Winship Erazo and her husband Edison of Longmont; John Winship and his wife Shelby of Johnstown, CO; his sister Ruth Bauer of Wray, CO; his adoring grandchildren Quentin Dreyer and Eli Dreyer of Manning, Miles Dreyer and Max Dreyer of Lincoln, Kamila Erazo and Josep Erazo of Longmont, and Madison Jo Winship of Johnstown. He is further survived by his 12 nieces and nephews with 14 great-nieces and nephews, his mother-in-law Anabel Rose, sister-in-law and her husband, Deborah and Allan Guse, and revered extended family. He leaves behind many treasured friends and his adored cat, Sofee. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 17,2019 from 4- 6 p.m. at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel at 326 Terry St. Longmont, CO. The funeral service will be Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at First Evangelical Lutheran Church at 803 3rd Ave. Longmont, CO. Burial will take place on Friday, December 20, 2019 in Hay Springs, NE at Pine Knoll Cemetery at the Dreyer Ranch. I happened upon Dr. Dreyer's obituary this evening, and I am stunned to learn of his death. What a stark reminder that we need to stay in better touch with those we have known and loved! Dr. Dreyer and his partners at Animal Hospital gave me my first job in the world at the age of something like 14. The opportunity, the education, the friendship, the trust they all placed in me - this has had an incalculable impact on my life. I have reflected on this often, with deep gratitude. Truly Dr. Dreyer and everyone at Animal Hospital became a second family for me. Donald Dreyer - you were an exemplar! A superb veterinarian, a man of kindness and compassion with such dear and gentle bedside manner, a superb father (always proud of your sons)...I observed with admiration the playful, loving relationship you had with Myra Jo as the ideal of the married couple...your commitment to community activity and endeavors - a great citizen! I so deeply regret that over the past many years I did not make a better effort to see you and tell you these things in person. Thank you, Donald Dreyer, for the life you lived, for the care you gave to so many of God's creatures, both man and beast, thank you for the opportunities you gave me in my young life...you gave me one of the greatest gifts one person can give another, the feeling that you "believed in me"..the gratitude I feel for you is unending. To your family I offer my deepest sympathy as you farewell this magnificent man.

We can't express how much Dr Donald has meant to our family. This community will miss this wonderful, compassionate man. Dr D was more than a vet to our fur kids, he was a member of our family for more than 30 years. We enjoyed sharing stories of our families and loved hearing how proud he was of his sons. He loved sharing his life adventures with us, especially updates on his ranch.

Dr Donald had a way with animals and taking care of their parents as well.

When it was time for our dear Georgia to cross over to the rainbow bridge, Dr. Donald was there for us. He even took the time to come to our house so our dog could pass quietly at home.

He was a true blessing to many. Our condolences to his family. He will be missed and forever loved.

What a talented, kind, caring man Don was. We are so sorry to hear of his passing. For many years we enjoyed being in choir with Don at First Lutheran and hearing his beautiful voice. Fondly remember the Ryssby services when he often sang a solo on Oh Holy Night and we had a great choir party at his home after the services concluded. He will be missed.

What a wonderful, gentle, caring, quiet-spoken guy. We were so happy to see him at our 50th Veterinary Class Reunion in September. Thinking of you Leslie, Jay, Lee and the others.

I first met Dr. Dreyer in 1989 after just moving to Colorado. I was newly divorced with no money, a baby girl, four dogs and ten stray cats that I'd taken in who needed medical care. Dr. Dreyer took such wonderful care of so many of my pets, often meeting my little girl and I late at night to care for one of my animals, and allowing me to make payments on my bill. Years later, after Dr. Mannis and Dr. Ferguson had retired from Animal Hospital, I'd breathe a sigh of relief when I was told Dr. Dreyer was working the day I needed an appointment. And 29 years later, he'd always inquire about my daughter when I saw him. They don't make Vets like him anymore. They don't make people like him anymore. I'll miss you Dr. Dreyer. Thank you for everything you did for my pets. It was an honor to know you. I'll miss you.

Dr. D was my boss at The Animal Hospital in the 70's. A very kind man, he was a good teacher. I was fresh out of school ( Vet Tech) and learned a lot from him.
My condolences to his family.

I and Prince Valiant, my cat, loved Dr. Dreyer. We have missed him so much since his retirement as he was "old school vet" that so many of us miss today, that loving, personal, individual, listening, gentle touch given to our little critters. Prince Valiant and I send our love to his family. We feel so lucky to have known him.

I had the privilege of working along side Dr. Dryer for several years at the Animal Hospital. He was a kind, compassionate man with a great sense of humor. I will always remember the Christmas parties he was so proud to host in his home for us! My heartfelt sympathy to Leslie and all of his family...JoAnn Gammon

I have known Dr. Dreyer since 1992 when my cat had an emergency late at night. At the time I was not a client of the Animal Hospital but called them in a panic and Dr. Dreyer met me there no questions asked and saved the life of my cat over the next three days. He continued to show compassion and take exceptional care of all my animals until he retired and I trusted no one more than him. I feel privileged to have known this wonderful man and my heart grieves right along with his family- Kathy Miyasaki and family
