I was a student intern in the District Attorney's office in the spring of 1984. I remember Mr. Hofstrom vividly, an unlit cigar his mouth, tromping up and down the halls, files under his arm, his black beard forming an impenetrable border around his face save for the opening of his large smile. He would get on the intercom and burst forth with requests, orders and commands like a Navy captain -- I could never tell if these were serious or for comic relief. He was the most intimidating short man I ever met, but I had the sense that all around him adored him. I don't think I spoke more than a few words to him in my few months there, but he made a rather outsized impression on me. His looks to have been a life well lived, and my thoughts are with his family and many friends. He did real, lasting, tangible good for the Boulder community.

I met Pete as a young attorney doing relatively minor criminal defense work, and it soon became clear that he was interested in justice first and foremost. Boulder County was fortunate to have him for so many years, and his legacy will live on through those whose lives and careers he touched.

Bill Wise was quite fond of Pete and spoke of him often when recalling his days with the DA's office. I really appreciated his call and kind sentiments after Dad passed in 2016. Rest in peace Mr. Hofstrom.

The unlit cigar between the lips held firm by clenched teeth, the black marker marked legal pads, that mischievous laugh, a humane and practical approach to justice, stalwart leadership and a commitment to common decency and respect are among treasured memories of Peter Allen Hofstrom. On may his legacy of believing in others live. May light shine upon you, Pete.
