Stuart Herschleb Obituary

Dr. Stuart John Herschleb, 72, passed away while enjoying one of his favorite activities, riding his motorcycle on Friday, February 26, 2016. At this time his passing appears to have caused him to fall off the motorcycle, rather than the other way around. Some remember Dr. Herschleb as a kind and caring dentist, with his office at 2824 Broadway in Boulder, just across from Boulder Community Hospital. Although he did some of the best work in Boulder County, he kept his fees low out of concern for his patients. He was always willing to treat his patients, even if they could not pay, so kind was his heart. His legacy lives on in part with the smiles of his patients. Dr. Herschleb always loved music and motorcycles. He was raised in Stillwater, MN where he was part of the high school band, playing leading parts in both saxophone and clarinet. He was always joyful playing some nice jazz on his sax. He was also the swimming team's MVP. He loved motorcycles, both off road and touring. He has customized many motorcycles, and the creator of the "cruiser" motorcycle. An expert off road rider, he could climb hills that most could not. An avid motorcycle tourist, he rode through the whole country many times, including Alaska and back. If the roads were clear of snow, you could talk him into taking a ride anytime. In recent times, everyday he enjoyed walking around his neighborhood, chatting with his neighbors and feeding treats to the dogs. Dr. Herschleb is survived by his two children, Garrett (Miao Wang) and LeeAnn (Terry) Tyrrell, his mother Jean, Grandson, Trace Tyrrell and his brothers Don, Kent, John, and his sister Dian. A Visitation will be held from 9:00 am - 10:30 am, Monday, March 7, 2016, Carroll-Lewellen Funeral Home Chapel, 503 Terry St., Longmont, CO. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 am. Interment following the Service at Foothills Gardens of Memory, Longmont, CO. Please join the family for a reception following the interment at the Carroll-Lewellen Reception Hall. Stuart did my fillings 52 years ago when we were both young. He never charged me what it should have cost and I see he continued that. I have never forgotten him and never will. RIP

I was thinking of Stu today, looked him up online, and wanted to call him. I was blowing my trumpet which made me think of Stu. And remembering his accomplished talents on the saxophone. Not just beautiful sound, intonation, and control. He was a "technician", skilled in every scale, major, minor, etc. As a professional musician, you have to know what this is about. And Stu did. And he was professional in all aspects of his life. Dentistry, fatherhood, music, motorcycle riding, and much more. Deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He was my friend, and a friend to all. God you bless Stu. I'm bringing my trumpet and will see you soon. The music is just getting started.

Stu was my good friend for over 20 years. We motorcycled everywhere. My favorite trip with Stu was to Yellowstone and Bear Tooth Pass. Many memories of dirt biking in Moab. Stu was just a gem of a guy. I sure do miss my friend. There will never be another like Stu.

Dr Herschleb hired me as a receptionist / assistant in June of 1978. I had just graduated from Niwot HS and he was working in a little green house as his dental office on Broadway in Boulder. He has bought the practice from Dr Shortell. Who used to come by the office once in a while. I worked for Dr Herschleb for about three years. I worked with Kathy ?, who moved away and I worked then full time. He loved his motorcycles and I talked him into listening to early Beetles music on Friday afternoons. More fun than the elevator music we usually had. He was very nice and had a great laugh. He liked his leather motorcycle clothes and had a cool sidecar, that he would use along with his motorcycle. I got to meet his son Garrett and daughter Leann many times and wife Barbara, who he adored. He was a very good father. He played the saxophone in our office when he would have some free time. RIP Dr H.

Stu and I were very good fiends at University of North Dakota. I mostly remember his passion for music and mathematics. I have only seen him once since then when he visited after we had managed to reestablish contact. My condolences to the family with special greetings to his brother Don.

Bill & I met Stu at Church and he was our dentist for many years until he retired. We would talk about God and our beliefs. Often Stu and I would also talk motorcycles. My riding was mostly off-road while his was on-road. We especially liked to talk about his 2-bike bike. The super-long and easy to take someone riding with him. We will always miss him.

Dr. Herschleb was my dentist from the time I arrived in Boulder as a student in 1975 until he retired. He was an outstanding dentist and a dear man. He was one of the most sincere and unaffected people I have ever met -- very kind, occasionally endearingly goofy, and genuinely interested in others. I am very sad to learn of his passing and send condolences to his family and friends.

Good bye to a great man

In the early 90's when I was living in Boulder, I called about 10 dentists trying to find someone to give me a good price on a crown. Dr. Herschleb did one better. He was able to fix the tooth with a very low-cost cement bond, and I still have it to this day. He became my favorite dentist of all time and one to whom I referred all my friends. Even after I moved to Southeast Denver in the mid 90's, I continued to drive up to Boulder for my dental care until Dr. Herschleb retired. I was so disappointed when he retired, and I have never found anyone half as good to this day. I remember Dr. Herschleb as always making me laugh with his silly dentist jokes during the cleanings! He was a great dentist who kept his costs low and really cared about his patients. Coincidentally, it was one of those patients - a friend I had referred to him for dental care many years ago - who told me of his passing. Ironically, the friend called me yesterday at exactly 2:30! This was the time, according to Dr. Herschleb, that you're supposed to go to the dentist. Get it? Tooth-hurty? This is the first joke he ever told me. Condolences to your family on the loss of a great man.

Stu was a great friend and neighbor who will I will miss dearly. He was always kind and friendly and willing to take the time to talk with everyone. He was a walking encyclopedia of Music, Motorcycles and Ministry. We were blessed to know him oddly enough through our dog Jara. Stu was always one to befriend all the neighborhood dogs and once he met Jara they were friends forever. What started with walks around the neighborhood ended up to trips around Longmont to their special places to keep their walks "different" He was always welcome at our family events and was truly part of our family. This is truly a sad day for all that knew Stuart but I know he was doing what he loved and will be welcomed in heaven as a wonderful person with a heart of gold. Stu you will be truly be missed.

My wife and I have known Stu since we were both young married couples. We met through church. Stu and I shared a love of motorcycles and, as couples, we took trips together on our bikes, A couple of favorite trips were along Minnesota's scenic "north shore" of Lake Superior and to Lake of the Woods in Canada. After Stu moved to Colorado, he would let us know when he was coming to MN for a visit, sometimes spending the night with us on his way to visit family. We had a schnauzer named Baxter. Stu would get on the floor with Baxter and check his teeth and then give us a dental report. Always the dentist! We have many fond memories of Stu as a good friend, man of faith and a gentle man. Our sympathies to his family. May it comfort you to know that his sunset on this earth was his sunrise in heaven.

Stu was a very good neighbor. I would walk with him before I had an operation (and have not walked a lot since). He and I would talk a lot about God, I will miss seeing him walking our neighbor's dog, and his welcoming wave. My husband and I will miss a very good neighbor. Praying for the Holy Spirit to comfort his mother(who he admired very much ) and all of his family members. Larry and Josie Warren

Stu...he was a great friend to me and everyone. Whenever we had family gatherings or parties, he was always there for me to spend time with and feel more comfortable. I loved how I could tell him anything and he would intensely listen back and always have a response to keep a good conversation going. The first time I met stu, I won't lie, I was kind of curious on why my aunt thought a 16 year old kid would have fun with an old man, but he welcomed me with arms wide open and proved that we had a lot in common. The jam sessions we had were very fun. Stu was so creative in his music. He makes me strive to be a better symphonic player myself and put more soul into each song. Stu was a great friend to all of us and I will dearly miss him. Visiting Colorado won't be the same without him.

Stu was indeed a kind and gentle man. His love of music and his enthusiasm to play in the "Class of '62 Reunion" band was fun to see. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

A good man has gone HOME. What great music at our 50th class reunion. I will miss the E-mails from STU. He shared his Faith with me. When my daughter passed he shared words of wisdom and faith. Always wanted to go for a cruise with him. Guess it will have to wait until I hopefully join him upstairs. Class of 1962 will miss your music.

Stu was the most gentle, god-fearing man I've ever known. We had so many fun adventures over the years. I will miss this great man and only hope I can become as good a mentor to a younger guy as Stu was to me...

I worked for Dr. Herschleb for 10 years and have lots of great memories of him. He loved ice cream and during our lunch break I would bring him a Heath blizzard from the nearby Dairy Queen. On a sunny afternoon he suggested we take a motorcycle ride on his cruiser he designed and his buddy helped him build. I hopped in the side car and of course Dr. H had helmets wired so we could communicate while cruising up Broadway in Boulder. He new how to make me laugh and enjoy life. I new on his birthday I had to make a special cake for him. I designed a dirt track with brown sugar, which wrapped around small mounds for hills and little streams of water in blue icing. He was appreciative of anything I did. He had his brothers who were fisherman in Alaska and when they sent him King salmon he would give Mike and I some of that canned salmon. What a fun place to work and he became a wonderful friend for life. We kept in touch ever since and my husband Mike and I will miss that laugh and smile of his.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

He is gone but will never be forgotten.

My three daughters and I were dental patients of Dr. Herschleb for many years - he was the best dentist ever and just a wonderful person. We were so sorry to hear of his passing - but glad to hear that he was doing what he loved at the end. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

It was a blessing and a pleasure to know Stu, a friend & fellow classmate from Stillwater High School. I hadn't seen him in 50 years until our 50th class reunion in 2012. Stu and the band members brought so much enjoyment to our reunion with the musical entertainment. Both Liz and I have wonderful memories of that evening in Stillwater. I've always remembered and admired Stu as being a quality person who was a man of faith and who always stood on high moral ground, from his youth. He was a truly remarkably gifted and kind man.

Following the class reunion, Stu became an email friend of my wife, and he regularly shared interesting email forwards with many great photos, history, humor, animals and expressions of faith and encouragement. Most emails he shared with Liz were forwarded by her to many others, as well. Liz enjoyed receiving his email forwards, and his own personal words of faith he often shared with her.

Here's a little note he'd written to us this past Valentine's Day: ... loved your card, even though it was a bit "fishy" ...ha,ha! May our Lord send many blessings to you and John. I hope John is fully recovered from the shoulder surgery by now. Heading down to First Pres in Boulder this morning, and, with this unseasonably warm weather, I just may hop on the motorcycle to get there! Love, Stu.

We send our heartfelt sympathy to his family and loved ones during this time. Stu has gone home now, to receive a great reward, and he will be remembered and missed by both of us and by all who knew him.

You brought music to our many parties at my house. You played and sang and we all joined in. You will always be remembered my friend.

Our dear friend has gone to heaven. Dr. H is one of the best men I've ever known, I've never heard a negative comment from. Him, we should all aspire to be like him. I've know Doc for over 33 years, we met in July, 1982 when my wife Betsy started to work for him at his dental practice in Boulder. We have been friends for all these years, we moved to Estes Park, CO in 1996 and Doc would come to visit us, we would meet for a picnic lunch and hike in Rocky Mountain National Park, we also rode our motorcycles to Steamboat Springs Colorado for an overnight get away, staying at a nice B and B and sharing the beauty of the area. We moved to Fort Collins, Colorado a couple years ago and we would visit Doc on our way to or from Boulder, he sometimes played some Sax music for us, he was the altimate Sax Man. We especially enjoyed our visits with Doc, he's always been inspirational and encouraging and could always quote a verse in the Bible to to help during difficult times. We loved all the wonderful e mails he shared with us every week, and the stories of his motorcycle travel adventures. He will be missed but never forgotten he will live on in the memories we have of this wonderful, gentle and caring man.
