Angus Askew Obituary

ASKEW "BIGHEAD", Angus Elmo, 88, of Chesterfield, Va., passed away Monday, January 9, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Ford Askew; mother, Dora Lee Dunivan Askew; sisters, Bertha Burnside, Elizabeth Luck, Louise Motley; brothers, Silas Joe Askew, Eugene Askew, Floyd Ray Askew and Thomas Askew; son, Clifford S. Askew; son-in-law, Gary D. Bryant Sr.; and stepson, Kenneth Stanley.

Angus enjoyed life and being with family and friends. He tried many things over the years, including a hand at boxing. He wanted to become a professional boxer and fought several matches at The Arena in Richmond, Va. He also enjoyed racing; he loved to drive fast and furious on many dirt tracks throughout Virginia. This led to his love of NASCAR and being a fan for over 50 years. He and his late wife, Sally would travel to many states and met many of the NASCAR drivers over the years; one of his favorites was Jeff Gordon.

Angus began his working career at a very young age with the Dymacek Lumber Company in Bumpass, Va. He also worked for CNP Railroad for many years in his 20s and eventually he started his own roofing company. He owned and operated a successful business, Flat Roof Specialty for over 50 years. He was asked many times how he could do such a hard job; he would say, "I love my work." Everyone that knew him understood what a hardworking man he was and continued to be until he had to retire at the age of 73.

He is survived by his children, Rita Walker (Allie), Rhonda Lowry (Mike), Wayne Askew (Carolyn), Lynn Bryant (Jay) and Michael Stanley (Lisa); 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 13 at Bliley's Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, Va. 23230, where a service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, January 14. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
