Ashton Rose Obituary

Dr. Ashton Neal Rose

Dr. Ashton Neal Rose, 78, of Charles City, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 2, 2025. Born in Columbia, SC, on March 9, 1947, he was the son of the late Ernest Ashton Rose and Mary Neal Cloaninger Rose. Neal is survived by his wife, Betty Sue Owen Rose, of Charles City, VA; his two sons, Darren Rose of Providence Forge, VA and Ashton Rose and wife Christina of Manhattan Beach, CA; his granddaughters, Paloma and Luca Rose of Manhattan Beach, CA; his sister, Kaye Houser and husband, Joe, of Chapin, SC; his niece Anne Marie Smallwood and husband, Jason, of Chapin, SC; and his great nieces Mary Ashton and Millie Grace Smallwood of Chapin, SC.

Neal graduated from Clemson University in 1968 and then entered the University of Georgia Veterinary School graduating in 1972. After graduation he accepted a position with Dr. Rowe at the Broad Street Veterinary Hospital in Richmond, Virginia and went on to purchase the Hospital upon the retirements of Dr. Rowe and Dr. Philpy. Neal was both skilled and practical in his professional career. He was an insightful entrepreneur who built a highly professional practice at Broad Street Veterinary Hospital. He helped mentor all who had an interest in helping animals. After 50 wonderful years of being a well-loved and trusted veterinarian, Neal retired in 2022. Neal will be remembered for having a positive attitude, a hearty laugh, and a love for animals. He was a cherished friend to many and a trusted healer of treasured pets. We will forever be grateful for our time spent with him. Neal loved the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, and gardening were his passions, including traveling to the Amazon and the Seychelles to fish.

Funeral services were held at 11:00AM, Saturday, June 14th, at Lebanon Methodist Church, 10220 Garners Ferry Rd, Eastover, SC 29044. The family received friends prior to the service at the church. Burial followed the service in the Rose plot of the Church cemetery. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 803-754-6290, www.shivesfuneralhome.com, assisted the family. I loved him like a big brother and a best friend! We were in the Centerville Hunt Club together in 1974! We did Rabies Clinics twice a year until he retired. He loved riding through the country going to hunt clubs and gathering places to do the dogs and cats and talking with all the people! He was the most kind, loving, humble friend I have ever had! He will be so missed! My prayers and thoughts for Betty and the family!

I just learned of Neal´s passing. Losing him as a friend makes me very sad, but more than that, it is impossible to overstate the compassion that Neal felt for animals and the people who loved them. Neal cared for all of my pets for over 50 years. During the terribly sad and difficult moments he was always the kindest of friends always with a kind and gentle demeanor. Veterinary medicine has lost a truly wonderful person. I will always be thankful for his friendship and kindness.
Heartfelt condolences to all of his family.

Neal was a good friend and led Lower Richland High School
to the championship in football as a 141lbs tackle. He was committed to be all he could be (which was a lot). He and I shared a covey of birds behind his house on Sumter highway. I'll see him next stop; we're meeting at The East Side Gate in 2048-come join us.
