Barbara Flippen Obituary
Barbara Ann Thomas Flippen was born September 6, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan. She is deceased as of April 14, 2005 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Barbara lived the majority of her life in Daytona Beach, Virginia Beach, Richmond, and Atlanta. She was the only daughter of Marvin Simpson Thomas (deceased) and Marjorie Stewart Thomas. She is survived by her mother, Marjorie of Virginia Beach; and her son, Stewart Garland Flippen and his wife, Kathleen Sams Flippen and their son, Christopher Stewart Flippen, all of Richmond, Virginia. She is also survived by two brothers, Roger Bradfield Thomas of Norfolk, Virginia and Stephen Edward Thomas of North Carolina, and his daughter, Leighton Kitridge Thomas of Maryland. Barbara was predeceased by her father, Marvin of Virginia Beach; her oldest brother, Stewart Marvin Thomas of Atlanta; and her daughter, Catherine Stone Flippen of Richmond. Barbara received a B.A. degree in Art from Mary Washington University, an undergraduate diploma from Norfolk Academy (Country Day School for Girls), and a post-graduate certification as a laboratory technician in Veterinary Science. Her interests in life revolved around art, design, horticulture, animal care, bridge, and civic involvement. She was a member of the Junior League of Richmond and Atlanta for 25 years, a junior board member and officer of the Children's Hospital of Richmond for 18 years. Having returned to Virginia Beach six years ago, Barbara was a member and officer of the Cavalier Garden Club, a member of the Princess Anne Country Club, and a member of Galilee Episcopal Church. Barbara's employment endeavors included 17 years as sales manager for Forsyth Fabrics in Atlanta, 33 years of free lance, private and gallery art commissions in Richmond, Atlanta and Virginia Beach. Design efforts followed Forsyth Fabrics with a part time design consultation for The Second Yard at Virginia Beach. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel is handling the arrangements. A memorial service will be held at the Galilee Episcopal Church on Monday, April 18, 2005 at 11:30 a.m. A private family interment at the Galilee columbarium is planned. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad or the SPCA.
