Barbara S. Shumate

SHUMATE, Mrs. Barbara S., went to be with her savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 after a brief illness. She was 92 years old. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 63 years, Leon. She is survived by two sons, Bernard (Vicky) and Tom (Kim); and four grandchildren, Rebecca, Andrew, Emily and Spencer. Barbara was raised in Danville, Va., but resided in Richmond, Va. since 1965. Barbara was known for her honesty, caring spirit, sweet demeanor, her generosity to others and was a wonderful role model for her family and friends. Barbara was a dedicated friend to have and she loved to send cards and letters to those who may have been suffering. She dearly loved spending time with her family and was the organizer of many family vacations to Myrtle Beach. Barbara supported her family by becoming an avid sports fan and attended hundreds of Virginia Tech football games with Leon and her family. She was a devoted member of West End Assembly of God for 28 years. All who had the privilege of knowing Barbara are grieving her passing. She will be sorely missed! In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her honor to the local ALS-DC/MD/VA Chapter 7507, Standish Place, Rockville, Md. 20855. A memorial service will be held on May 22, 2021 at 1 p.m. at West End Assembly of God Church, located at 401 N. Parham Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229.
