Betty Cord Obituary

Betty S. Cord

September 17, 1935 - June 21, 2025

Betty Lou Simpson Cord, 89, of Wake and formerly of Henrico County, has left this earth on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at her residence.

She will join her one true love Paul J. Cord, Jr. (John) who predeceased her in 2001.

She is survived by her only child, Jonni Lou Cord and her spouse, Elizabeth Downes who jointly cared for Betty in her final days. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Powell O'Bannon.

She was born to George W. Simpson and Mary P. Wiley Simpson on September 17, 1935.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Alfred H. Simpson; and her sister, Georgie S. O'Bannon.

"We will feel her in the rain, in the wind, in the bite of snow, in the scent of autumn leaves, and in deep penetrating silence. We will miss her terribly but will never be away from her. Betty Lou returns to joy. As we all will, one day."

There will be a private burial at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local PBS station.

Jonni, Your mom was my third grade teacher at Lakeside Elementary School. She was such a sweet lady, and we all loved her. When my classmates get together and talk about our school days, her name often comes up. She is a big reason that, 65 years later, I still have fond memories of elementary school.
