Carl William Smith

Carl Smith Obituary

Carl William Smith, of Charlottesville, died peacefully Thursday afternoon, December 8, at Westminster Canterbury. Born to Dr. Carl W. Smith and Lila Vicars Smith, Young Carl grew up in Wise, Va. and attended Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, W.Va., where he played football. His grandfather, knowing how much he loved sports, worried at the time that Carl had decided to "educate his feet" instead of his mind. This proved to be untrue as Carl graduated from high school and was recruited to play football for the University of Virginia where he earned a degree in economics. At the university, he played offensive guard for Coach Art Guepe, learned an ethical basis for commerce through classes such as E.A. Kincaid's Money and Banking, and received his B.A. in 1951. He credited his education under the honor system at UVa. as a profoundly important influence in his personal and professional life. Carl served as a second lieutenant in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and spent one year in Korea. Mr. Smith started his career in the early 1950's as a stock broker in Richmond, Virginia, then he and his wife returned to Charlottesville, a town they loved, to raise a family and begin his life as a businessman known for his principles and vision. He founded the AMVEST Corporation in 1960 and was CEO and Chairman of the Board until his retirement in early 2004. Mr. Smith remained as Director Emeritus until his death. Mr. Smith was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, The Raven Society, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and the Imp Society. He, along with the Vicars family, established a chair in Business Ethics at the University of Virginia Law School in memory of his grandfather, Judge O.M. Vicars, of Wise, Va. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 53 years, Hunter J. Smith; three children, Carl Vicars Smith, Stuart Peyton Smith and Hunter Smith Croson; and one grandson, Corey Carter Croson. He will also be remembered by cousins, Mary M. Walker of Sarasota, Fla., and Dr. L.B. Sheppard of Boca Grande, Fla. and their families. Family and friends recall his competitive spirit and great sense of humor. Associates and colleagues loved his hard-nosed, creative, and ethical approach to business dealings. A memorial service will be held Monday, December 12, 2005 at 4 p.m. at the University of Virginia Chapel, the Reverend Miller Hunter presiding. A reception follows for remembrances at Alumni Hall. There will be a private burial at Monticello Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in Mr. Smith's name to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, P.O. Box 316, Charlottesville, Va. 22901 or the Virginia Athletic Foundation, specifically a Carl Smith scholarship for football, P.O. Box 400833, Charlottesville, Va. 22904. The family would like to thank Westminster Canterbury for the care given to Mr. Smith during his illness. Very special thanks go to Shirley Henderson, Doretha Givens, and Doris Dowell. Hill and Wood Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Dear Hunter,

I am sad that you are without Carl.I think you will remember that I worked for Carl before Amvest..I have movies of you both at my wedding in 1966 out in Earlysville. Carl taught me to have self confidence and I credit him for so much of my work ethics. He was like a father to me and I hated leaving Charlottesville because it meant leaving his employ.

My very best to you and your family. Someday when I'm in

Charlottesville seeing relatives, I will give you a call.

God bless you....

Fondly, Paige Pratt Rose

Hunter,

I was very sorry to hear of Carl's death. He was a true friend. Those years that we were all together in Charlottesville will never be forgotten.

I regret that I was unable to attend the memorial service but I was represented by my grandson, Jim Woolford.

Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I never met Carl Smith. However, I graduated in 1983 from Clinch Valley College and there was no football team at that time. I talked with several professors who are still at the school and they were all so excited when Mr. Smith gave CVC the wonderful donation for its football team. How wonderful for him to think about the folks at home after all this time. So many people forget that UVa has had a branch in Wise County for decades. Mr. Smith did not forget. I am so sorry for your loss.

Dear Hunter, I was saddened to hear of the loss of Carl. I only met him a few times when I started to work at AMVEST Osage in 2002. I was taken by his keen sense of encouragement with our project. I truly belieive he was a great businessman and philanthropist. You and your family are in our prayers. I wish you many blessings in the days and months ahead.

I learned only this morning of Carl's passing due to being away from home over the weekend.

I had the privilege to work for Carl for 10 years and treasure the memories from that time and the fine people I worked with at AMVEST. I especially remember the give and take about Hokie vs. UVA Football.

Mr. Smith will be missed greatly.

Dear Hunter,

I am so sorry for your loss. I think Carl would believe it is for the best. He was like a father for me at times, and more than anything, a friend I could try to emulate. Sadly, it was too brief a time, but he will provide me - and I think everyone - with fond memories. You will be in my prayers.

Sincerely,

Eric

Dear Hunter and your children,

I was saddened to learn of the merciful passing of my old friend, former fraternity brother, and colleague. I will always remember his relentless competitiveness and exemplary love for the University. It is said that "Everyone dies, but not everyone lives." Carl truly lived and made a positive impact on many individuals and particularly the University. His name and legacy will survive for many generations to come. I am grateful for my time with Carl and will cherish fond memories of good times together. May our merciful and loving God give you and your children strength and comfort during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathies to dear Mrs. Smith and her children. Mr. Smith was hardest working, most dedicated and intensely focused person I have ever known. He loved his company and his family very much. It was a privilege to work for him for so many years. It was hard work, but it was such a treat to work for a truly focused and special person. My thoughts and prayers go to the Smith family, AMVEST Corporation employees, and his many friends.
