Carlene Bond Shackelford

SHACKELFORD, Carlene Bond, Carlene Shackelford, age 95, passed away on August 13, 2023, in Richmond, Va with her son by her side. She was born on January 6, 1928, in Danville, Va. Carlene was a loving and caring person who always stood up for others.

Carlene had many interests and hobbies. She was an accomplished golfer, winning numerous amateur tournaments. She had a green thumb and loved cultivating plants, often gifting them to her friends and family. Her garden was always thriving, and she took pride in having a ripe tomato by the 4th of July. Carlene was also known for her culinary skills, with her cranberry bread and butterscotch haystacks being favorites among her loved ones. She had a fondness for birds, especially Cardinals, and enjoyed watching them. In her free time, she enjoyed playing games like Rummy and Yahtzee, and occasionally tried her luck at the casino slot machines.

Carlene is survived by her son Steve Shackelford, daughter-in-law Vicki Shackelford, and her brother Herbert Junior Bond. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin "Bob" Shackelford, and several brothers and sisters.

Carlene's faith played an important role in her life. She worshipped at Calvary Baptist Church in Virginia Beach and later at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church in Richmond, Va.

A graveside service for immediate family is being planned to honor Carlene's memory. In remembrance, the family kindly requests that any charitable donations be made to Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church in her honor. Contributions can be made at hatcherchurch.org.

Carlene Shackelford will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Her loving nature, green thumb, and culinary skills will be cherished memories for all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
