Carolyn Hornsby Obituary

Carolyn Peltz Hornsby passed away peacefully, with her husband and children by her side, on Thursday morning, September 30, 2004, following a courageous eight year battle with breast cancer. She was 51. Carolyn lived life to the fullest until the very end, and was surrounded by family and friends during the days before her passing. The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice Support Care of Williamsburg for their kindness and expertise during her final days, and the doctors and staff at Virginia Oncology for enabling Carolyn to be vital until the end. Carolyn was a passionate woman, devoted to her family, friends, and education, both for her own children and her students. Carolyn taught elementary school at Berkeley Elementary School in Williamsburg from 1974 until 1978. She then started her family, during which time she was a home tutor until 1990. Carolyn taught at Sedgefield Elementary School in Newport News from 1990 until 1997. She was a substitute teacher at Hampton Roads Academy from 1998 until 2000. Carolyn was a member of Temple Rodef Sholom in Hampton for her entire life, where she became active in fundraising through their Sisterhood, particularly with her husband, for the annual Cabaret musical review. In 2000, Carolyn joined Temple Beth El in Williamsburg, where she and her husband were active in helping to plan and produce the annual Jewish Film Festival. Carolyn was an active member of Women's American ORT, and Child Development Resources, both organizations having been founded to help parents, adults and children in need, both medical and educational. Carolyn leaves behind parents, Stuart and Shirley Peltz of Newport News; her sister, Sharon Hermelin; and her brother-in-law, Mark Hermelin of Virginia Beach; her husband of 30 years, T. Hornsby of Williamsburg; her son, Scott Hornsby and his fiance, Kelly Gillespie of New York City; her daughter, Meredith Hornsby of New York City. She leaves behind many extended family, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Women's American ORT, 962 Nicklaus Dr., Newport News, Va. 23602, Child Development Resources, P.O. Box 280, Norge, Va. 23127 or a favorite charity. In accordance with Carolyn's wishes, arrangements are private. Bucktrout of Williamsburg is in charge of the arrangements.

I met Mrs. Hornsby only once or twice, but I could tell she was a woman excuding the kindest of souls. I've known Scott since college, when he and Kelly first began dating. If Scott is in any way the tiniest reflection of the person she was, she must have been an incredibly amazing and kind woman. I was deeply saddened to hear of your loss. All of my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Carolyn was a remarkable woman, and I feel blessed to have known her. I am very sad for all who mourn her passing. We had some great conversations many years ago, about our sons, who played Little League and went to Dutrow together, and about her students, as we'd see each other in the halls of Sedgefield or in the grocery store...so many fond memories! May you rest in peace,Carolyn, and may your family be comforted~~Sincerely, Barbara Bridges Churray

Hornsby Family,

I taught with Carolyn @ Sedgefield from the time she arrived in 1990 until I moved to Pa. in 1995. I was the music teacher. I am so sorry to hear about her passing. In fact, I had just been asking about her & was hoping that she was doing OK.

Carolyn & I had many laughs together & she was always so supportive of all my productions. I know how much she loved music & how much she loved to teach.

Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Sincerely,

Lois M. Clark
