Carolyn Oliver Obituary

Carolyn Wells Oliver, known to all as Meg, passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025, at Select Specialty Hospital in Newport News. She was 80 years old.

Meg was born on March 5, 1945, in Martinsville, Virginia, to Mary Elizabeth Gilbert Wells and Robert Melvin Wells. She lived a life defined by compassion, service, and a quiet strength that left a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

On June 17, 1967, Meg married the love of her life, Edward Louis Oliver. They shared more than 57 years of marriage before Edward's passing in January, building a life rooted in devotion, mutual respect, and family. Together, they raised three children and created a home filled with warmth, humor, and unwavering support.

Meg began her professional life as a high school teacher before answering a deeper calling to care for others, becoming a nurse in 1986. She spent over two decades as an Emergency Room nurse, where her calm presence, clinical skill, and fierce advocacy for patients defined her career. She was especially proud to serve as a head ER nurse, a role that reflected both her leadership and her dedication to helping people at their most vulnerable moments.

Helping others was not just Meg's profession, it was who she was. She was a tireless advocate for those she loved, willing to do whatever was necessary to support, protect, or uplift them. Her kindness was matched by her resilience, and her generosity by her sharp, brilliant sense of humor, including a well-appreciated taste for dark humor.

Outside of work, Meg found joy in the quieter rhythms of life. An avid reader throughout her life, she also loved crossword puzzles, never missed an episode of Jeopardy, and valued movement and mindfulness through walking, yoga, and meditation. She had a deep affection for birds, spending years welcoming them through an ever-changing array of feeders that reflected her attentiveness and care.

Above all, Meg was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her three children: Carter Herndon (Mike), Wells Oliver (Angela Hearne), and Langdon Oliver (Sharon); and her four grandchildren, Archer Herndon, OJ Herndon, Chase Oliver, and Kairi Oliver.

To her children, Meg was nurturing, steady, and endlessly loving. She was a source of comfort, wisdom, and unconditional support. She was warm, gentle, and always ready with an embrace. Her presence made people feel safe, understood, and deeply cared for.

Meg's life was one of quiet impact and profound love. Her legacy lives on in the lives she healed, the family she cherished, and the countless small acts of kindness that defined who she was.

"Meg was one in a million."

Carter, Wells, Langdon, Your Mom was indeed a special person. How many fun (,yes, fun), hours we spent in the JWER. Our after work gatherings with family and friends made wonderful memories. As we aged over the years and especially during the time your father was so sick, we had some heart to heart talks. She loved Eddie and each of you with all her heart. Each grandchild was special. After she was moved out town, I tried to just call and say hello. some days were good as you know and others not so much. It was so saddening when I as well as other close friends accepted the fact that "our" girl was not here anymore. To end on a warm and funny note---- note-- did you know your Mom brought her special rum cakes to work ? sure hope not! Betty Shumate

I met Meg and Eddie 52 years ago when my late husband Leitch and I started dating. Eddie and Leitch were fraternity brothers at Tech. The four of us enjoyed being together and sailing (Leitch and Eddie more than Meg and me) I was always in awe of your mom´s intellect, knowledge of literature and her wonderful sense of humor. We always laughed a lot. I was thrilled when I learned your parents were expecting a baby and before I knew it, there were three! We moved to NC so didn´t see each other as much but kept in contact. Leitch visited your dad when he was so ill and tried to keep in touch with your mom when she was at the Bluffs. Your mom was loved by all who met her. I know each of you share their great intellect, humor and caring. They will be missed by all.

I am beyond sad to hear of precious Meg´s passing and so very sorry for her family. I worked with Megatha at Johnston Willis Hospital close to 30 years ago. Such a great nurse and without a doubt one of the funniest people I have ever known. The shift was going to be a hoot if Meg was working. I love you Meg and so glad you´re with your Eddie. Rest easy girl, you deserve it .

I knew Meg as a neighbor in The Bluffs. Such a kind lady, determined to keep active. We supported each other with cheers to keep walking-especially when Meg was recovering from back surgery! She was certainly a bright light in my day whenever I encountered her!

I´ve said this to mutual friends but now to her family, Meg was my best friend and the memories go on and on of the times we shared growing up. No one can take that away. You will hear from many people in her life and she was certainly so very special. My condolences.

Meg was a friend to me, spending several years as nurses at JWH. In recent years we had reconnected, walked together, enjoyed memories. Meg kindly provided a ready ear when things got a bit tough for me. Her smile and her laugh never changed in the 30 plus years I knew her. I was so sad to see her leave Richmond. She will be missed so much. Best to Carter, Langdon , and Wells. She was so proud of all of you!

It is with such deep felt sadness I have at this moment, reading about Meg's passing. While I grew up with her through all of our 12 years in Martinsville, we reconnected a few years ago concerning another classmate of ours, David Ramsey. Meg was indeed special, kind, caring, and compassionate. I feel fortunate to have know her. God bless, Alan

So sorry to hear about the passing of my dear friend. I hired Meg in the ED and knew right away what a very special nurse she was and there was no limit to what she could do! Her compassion and humor was a bright star in our department. She will be missed.
