Charles Bice Obituary
Charles "Charlie" Bice Sr.
Charles Bice Sr., 81, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2024, surrounded by his family. An only child, he was born on September 1, 1942, in Decatur, AL, and called a few towns home in his early years, during which his father was assigned to various Air Force bases around the South. Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina would be the final station for his father's military career. As a result, in his freshman year at Fayetteville High School, "Charlie" met Peggy and began the undiminishing romance that endured ever since.
Charlie graduated from the University of South Carolina and was brought to Richmond in 1967 by Cameron Brown Mortgage. In 1972, now with three small children in the household, Charlie struck out and formed Mortgage Services, Inc. Over the years he complemented his mortgage business with real estate development. While he was known for a sharp business mind, his greatest enjoyment came in spending time with family and his many friends. He was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Shankers. He was always ready for a game of cards, backgammon or any competition that might invite a friendly wager. He loved spending summer weeks at the beach in North Carolina, first at Kure Beach and then at Figure 8 Island, surrounded by his children and later by his grandchildren, who treasured spending time with "Granpal" fishing or waterskiing or getting beat at gin rummy.
Charlie is survived by Peggy, his adored wife of 60 years; his son, Charles (Laura); and his daughters, Amy de Venoge (Frank) and Meg Bice. His grandchildren by Charles are, William, Matthew and Amelie Bice. His grandchildren by Amy are, Ella Powell (Wyatt) and Charlie and Gracie de Venoge. He is also survived by great-granddaughter, Blair Powell.
The family wishes to express profound gratitude for the Bon Secours Hospice House, which provided compassionate care for Charlie.
A celebration of Charlie's life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 Cary Street, on August 12th at 2 p.m. There will be a private burial at Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to First Presbyterian Church, St. Catherine's School, St. Christopher's School or Heartwood Grove School.
