Charles Wingo Obituary

Charles Francis Wingo, M.D., died March 10, 2004. A native of Richmond, he was born on April 16, 1920, the son of Early Obra Wingo and Bettie High Wingo. He was graduated from the University of Richmond and the Medical College of Virginia. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945. After training in Pulmonary Physiology at the Trudeau Sanatorium in Saranac, New York, he returned to Richmond as a member of the Pulmonary Staff at McGuire Veterans Medical Center. At McGuire Hospital, he served as chief of the Pulmonary Disease Section and established the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. He served as the director of the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1980 until his retirement in 1998. He was a dedicated physician to his patients and teacher to his medical students. Dr. Wingo was an associate clinical professor of medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. He was a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He was a member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the Medical Society of Virginia, the American Thoracic Society and the American Lung Association of Virginia. Dr. Wingo was a lifetime member of Southampton Baptist Church and served as chairman of the Board of Deacons and witness of his faith. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol Thompson Wingo; children, Charles Francis Wingo Jr. and Carol Wingo Dickinson and husband, V. Earl Dickinson Jr.; sister, Thelma Wingo Lowman and husband, Raymond C. Lowman; and five grandchildren, Charles F. Wingo III, Mary Elizabeth Wingo, V. Earl Dickinson III, Elizabeth Lockridge Dickinson and Carol Louise Dickinson. He was the brother of the late Emmett L. Wingo and Earl O. Wingo Jr. His family will receive friends on Friday, March 12 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bliley Funeral Homes' Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. Funeral services will be held at Southampton Baptist Church, 7521 Comanche Drive, on Saturday, March 13 at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Southampton Baptist Church, 7521 Comanche Drive, Richmond, Va. 23225, (804) 272-5942.
