Christine Young Obituary
YOUNG, Christine Carol Chapman, age 79, died on Monday, September 4, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Cora Lee Young and Calvin Chapman Young of Richmond. Her siblings were older brothers, David Chapman Young (Catherine) and the late Roger Calvin Young (Cheryl and Dawn), twin sister, Martha Lee Young Godsey (Joseph), and younger sister, Phyllis Ann Young Booth (Michael). She had ten nieces and nephews, a blessing for her and several great nieces and nephews.
Christine was born at Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, VA, on December 5, 1943 and was a lifelong Richmond resident. She was a 1961 graduate of Richmond's Thomas Jefferson High School where she was elected homeroom secretary and was a member in the high school orchestra, playing the flute in annual evening operettas and school day concerts. She was a 1965 graduate of Longwood College where she received a B.S. in Elementary Education and English. She also pledged Delta Zeta sorority and was a member of the synchronized swimming team, performing an underwater ballet of "The Nutcracker Suite." In 1974, she completed the state certification in library science at Virginia Commonwealth University. She was a 1984 M. Ed. graduate and graduate assistant at the University of Richmond.
Miss Young was a former elementary schoolteacher, a librarian with the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission, and an administrative assistant for 25 years. Thereafter, for ten years she was a community volunteer with St. Mary's Hospital, The Richmond Symphony, Virginia Opera, Reveille Church Library, Virginia Historical Society and the University of Richmond, primarily working in development.
Christine was a member of U of R's Theta Theta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi national honor society in education. She was a former 1st Vice Regent in her DAR chapter, historian in her UDC chapter, and treasurer in her UMW circle of the United Methodist Women. She was a regular former member in the Scottish Clan Lamont Society of North America (CLSNA), her father being tenth generation direct descendant of the clan Chieftain, Sir John Lamont and his wife, Mary Young, by way of their son, Andrew Young.
Christine wrote her over 31,000-word 2020 copyrighted book, Rainbow Arcs/Little Book of Memories: The Life Story of a Richmonder. She wrote the music and lyrics to her 1977 copyrighted song, "Thursday's Child (Has Far To Go)."
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2023 in the chapel at Reveille United Methodist Church, 4200 Cary Street Rd., Richmond, VA 23221. A reception will follow the service at the church. Inurnment will be private in the Garth at Reveille UMC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Reveille UMC.
