David Green Obituary

GREEN, David Lee Jr., age 77, born in Lawrenceville, Va., to Lottie B. Green and David Green Sr. (both departed), went to be with the Lord God on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at 7:35 a.m. Surrounded by his family, David passed peacefully at his home. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; and three children, Anna, Michael and Jay. David was a great man, a loving husband, a great father and a true friend. After serving four years in the army, he was honorably discharged. A trailblazer, he was the second black Virginia State Trooper and retired as a Virginia State Police Sergeant in 2010. David was proud to tell anyone who would listen that he shared the same birthday as Dolly Parton. He loved cars, watches, gadgets and gardening. A man of God, David served as a church deacon at the churches he attended. After retirement, he served his community by helping the homeless; passing out Bibles and assorted books at the Chesterfield Food Bank; raking leaves for neighbors; sharing the eggs his hens laid; and offering gardening advice on the Lawn Enforcement Gardner Facebook page.

David is survived by his sisters, Elsie Walker (Harvard) and Lucy Mae James (Thomas); his brothers, Larry Green (Dolphine) and Kenneth Green (Natasha). His departed siblings are Peter Green, Maggie Lee McFarland (James, departed), Melvinn Bonner (Camilla) and Willie Green (Nancy). His sisters-in-law are Jackie McNeil (Robert) and Karen Lindsay (Warren). His brothers-in-law are Abner Bruce (Phyllis), Norborne Bruce and Dwight Bruce (Carrie). His mother-in-law is Norma W. Bruce; and his father-in-law is Abner C. Bruce (departed). David is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bon Secours Hospice provided David's hospice care, whom we thank for their services. All are welcome to attend the funeral in person. You may also livestream the funeral at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, and leave a memory for the family at www.brownsfuneralserviceinc.com.

God placed David Green in my life for a reason, as we both attended Virginia state university, 1965-1967. David was a off campus student who drove from Lawrenceville, Va. everyday in his 1957 Ford. My brother was a barber there at that time period. David was kind enough to give me a ride after class one day to see my brother for a very important reason. I will forever be grateful for what he did for me that day, which impacted my life and my professional career.

I remember officer Green from his first years on the Virginia State Police Force. He was a guest speaker at my Career Day at the old L.P. Jackson High School in Dendron Virginia (Surry County). I was so pry to meet him because of his groundbreaking achievement as one of the first Black troopers in the state.

Had the pleasure of chatting with Sgt. Green at SPHQ a few times when he visited the Safety Division. Such a kind & approachable gentleman. His chats were interesting & I don´t think he ever met a stranger. My condolences to his family & may God´s perpetual light shine upon him.

David was such a really good man. He loved his family dearly and represented God in everything that he did. We worked together, along with Gloria, at Hopkins elementary as parent volunteers for several years. He was always there, always caring about all the children and how they could have a better education and life. As the years passed, I didn´t get to see him as often but then started seeing him at the grocery store. I found out that he had been volunteering at a neighboring school district trying o help and support the children there.
As time passed, he and Gloria became kind friends to our daughter and her family. They shared dozens of eggs with them and helped them with wisdom to grow their vegetable garden. They meant so much to her and her children.
I am sure that when he went to heaven he heard, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
