David Suskind Obituary

SUSKIND, David Norman, 93, died on October 21, 2021. David was born in New York City on February 5, 1928, the son of Stella and Louis Suskind. He spent most of his early life in Washington, D.C. before moving to Richmond in 1970. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Fitch Suskind; his daughter, Elizabeth; son, Gregory; daughter-in-law, Dorothy; and two grandsons, Mac and Charlie Suskind. David served for several years in the Navy and graduated in 1952 from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service; he later became a C.P.A. His business career included acting as chief financial officer for a number of companies, including Woodward & Lothrup and Hahn Shoes, both in Washington, D.C.; and as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Miller and Rhoads Department Stores. He was active in various civic and charitable organizations, was on the boards of the Red Cross and the Retail Merchants Association. For many years, he was a volunteer at St. Stephen's Church, after retirement acting as a lay visitor, and had a wonderful time cooking with a group of men to benefit the outreach programs of St. Stephen's May Fair House. David was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather and cherished the time he spent with family and friends. He spent many happy hours hand-crafting intricate ship models, and one of the highlights of his many trips was visiting maritime museums to "check out the competition." He had a wonderful sense of humor and was especially adept at laughing at himself. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Richmond S.P.C.A., 2519 Hermitage Road, Richmond, Va. 23220; or the Richmond Animal League, 11401 International Drive, Richmond, Va. 23236; or to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23226, on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at

David was a sweet, humble, nice guy. Effective in a quiet way. I enjoyed our time together in civic matters. The world needs more Davids.
