Douglas Alexander Obituary

Douglas Gary Alexander, Sr.

Douglas Gary Alexander, Sr., aged 76, of Richmond, VA, passed away on March 27, 2025, following a brave battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marian Powell Alexander and Garland B. Alexander, as well as his son, Douglas Gary Alexander, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Trina Jaehnigen; his son, Shawn Christopher Alexander (Charlotte); his daughter, Kathryn Elaine Matthews (Tony); his sister, Elaine Alexander Eason (Mike); five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doug honorably served in the Army National Guard for six years. He joined the Bon Air Volunteer Fire Department in 1967. He later had the honor of being known as the youngest recruit of Fire School #1, which was the inaugural group of paid firefighters in Chesterfield County; Doug was assigned to Company #4. He subsequently joined the truck crew at Company #2, and ultimately concluded his career at Company #1 in Chester. He transitioned to volunteer status until the late 1980s. For a limited period of time, Doug also held the position of assistant volunteer district chief for Chesterfield Fire.

In 1970 Doug began working at the family business, Air Conditioner Suppliers, which later became known as Aireco Supply Inc. His tenure there lasted over 50 years, during which he held various roles, culminating in the management of construction projects and facility updates. He was instrumental in the design and layout of over 20 new locations and oversaw the remodeling of more than 10 existing sites. As a hands-on individual, he took great pride in his skills in building and repairing. He became a trusted resource for friends and neighbors seeking assistance.

Doug held a strong affection for Aruba, which he regarded as his second home and visited annually for the past 26 years. Doug always demonstrated a strong commitment to the welfare of animals. During many of his visits to Aruba, he engaged in the rescue of several cats and dogs. His dedication to animal care was highlighted by his decision to adopt many of the animals that were intended for adoption by others.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Doug will be held on Wednesday April 16, 4 to 7 p.m., at Bliley's Funeral Home, 6900 Hull St. Rd. N., Richmond, VA 23224.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be directed to Cat's Cradle of Greater Richmond, PO Box 70040, Richmond, VA 23255.
