Edward Gordon Obituary

GORDON, Edward Henry, Jr., passed away at home, at 101, on April 6, 2021, in Richmond, Va., with his son, Edward at his side. He was born February 2, 1920 in Richmond, Va., to Edward H. and Margaret Garrison Gordon.

In the early 1930s, the family moved to Portsmouth, Va., where he and his three siblings attended and graduated from Craddock High School. During WWII, Ed worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, building ships to support his country's war effort.

Following the war, Ed moved his growing family to Richmond, where he worked for Reynolds Metals until his retirement.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church for over 60 years and a faithful member of the Adams-Fellowship Bible Class. Ed was a devoted husband who loved his family, adored little children, was an avid gardener and fisherman, who could fix anything. In his later years, he enjoyed RV travel, spending the winters in Florida.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nore Coles Gordon; second wife, Mildred Price Gordon; daughter, Gail Drummond; and sisters, Margaret Edmonds and Doris Angel.

Survivors include his son, Edward R. "Randy" Gordon and wife, Sallie, of Blackstone, Va.; stepdaughter, Anne Wittel of Dallas, Texas; son-in-law, Doyle Drummond of Richmond; grandchildren, Christopher Drummond of Richmond, Jack (Laura) Gordon of Florence, Ky.; Sean (Beth) Drummond of Portland, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Jackson and Abigail Gordon, Hannah, Benjamin and Thomas Drummond; and brother, Jack R. Gordon and wife, Faye, of Scotland Neck, N.C.

A service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., Richmond, Va. Visitation will immediately precede the service at 9 a.m. Interment will follow at 2 p.m., Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 2709 Monument Ave, Richmond, Va. 23220.

I have only known Ed for a few years. We were members of the Adam Fellowship Men's Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church. After learning that Ed was 100 years old, I wanted to bond with him. He was truly a Christian Brother in the Lord. For a man of his age, he was truly endowed with good health and sound stamina. Later on, I began to call him my, "INSPIRATION". Hoping I will live as long as he did. He will be missed however, I believe he's in a better place. Your little brother in the Lord,Frederick.

Your classmates and most of your oldest friends are long gone and waiting for you at rest.
