Edward White Obituary
Edward James White of Kinsale died December 3rd, 2025. Mr. White was born in 1938 in Normandy, Missouri, the son of the late Victor Lee and Ira Lindeman White. He lived in Nashville, Tennessee from 1943 to 1960 and in Richmond, Alexandria, and Kinsale, from 1967 after graduating from the University of Virginia Law School.
He was a graduate of Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville in 1956 and Vanderbilt University in 1960. After college he served on active-duty officer in the Navy on the carrier USS Forrestal and the destroyer USS Borie. He was a member of the Naval Reserve from 1963-1973 and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After law school he was an Assistant Attorney General of Virginia from 1967-1970, specializing criminal appellate work and civil rights defense litigation. He was a Special Assistant to United States Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr. in 1970-1972 and was in private law practice in Alexandria from 1972-1997.
He moved to Kinsale in 1997 and served as a Member of the Vestry, Warden, and Treasurer of Cople Episcopal Parish. He was a former board member of the Kinsale Foundation, Hospice of the Northern Neck, the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society, and president of Preservation Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, Inc. for four years.
An ardent sailor of the Chesapeake Bay for 32 years, Mr. White also engaged in woodworking, genealogy, and photography. He was the author of: Kinsale - The Middle Period, The War Between the States in the Northern Neck of Virginia and the Waters Bounding It; Lands and Lesser Gentry of Eastern Westmoreland County, 1650-1840s; Nicholas Spencer (1633-1689) of Cople Parishes, Secretary of Virginia; Colonial Lands and Roads of Westmoreland County, Virginia, and a major contributor of text and photos to Historic Sites in Virginia 's Northern Neck & Essex County.
He is survived by nieces: Karen Duvier Holcomb of Nashville, TN; Susan Duvier Bass of College Grove, TN; Emily Duvier Zimmerman of Florida; and nephew Henry A. Duvier, Ill of Cookeville, TN, as well as ten great nieces and nephews and two great-great nephews and a great-great niece.
Service to be held at Yeocomico Church on Tuesday, December 16th at 10 a.m.; reception to follow at AmesLee Hall.
