Edwin Bishop Obituary

BISHOP, The Reverend Edwin L. "Ted", age 93, died peacefully surrounded by four generations of his family on October 3, 2023. Ted was born on February 24, 1930, in Seattle, Washington, the oldest son of the late Edwin Bishop and Velma Marie Spencer Bishop. He was educated in the Seattle Public Schools, graduated from the University of Washington, and completed his Master of Divinity at General Theological Seminary. He earned additional graduate degrees from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education and Virginia Commonwealth University. Ordained deacon on June 29, 1955, at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, Seattle and to the Episcopal priesthood February 6, 1956, at St. Luke's Church, Vancouver, WA. He served in parishes in Washington, Oregon, and Nevada.

Ted served in the Navy as a Combat Air Crewman during the Korean War and later was commissioned in the Chaplain Corps of the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Navy with the rank of Captain, Father Bishop served as interim pastor of churches in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Texas, and Hawaii. In retirement he was the Pastoral Associate at All Saints Church, Southern Shores, NC.

Ted's last years showcased his cheerful spirit and love of others. He brought smiles and joy to all he encountered. He especially enjoyed being with his three great-grandchildren, Liam, Adelaide, and James Rennie.

Father Bishop is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joan Avery Bishop and his brother, Don Bishop. Bruce Bishop, Ted's youngest brother, predeceased him by four weeks. Left to cherish his memory, sense of humor, and words of wisdom are his three children, Victoria Bell, Antoinette Rennie (Bruce), Matthew Bishop (Pam), three grandchildren, Chane Rennie (Alex), Jordan Rennie (Lauren) and Christian Rennie as well as numerous members of his beloved extended family.

Services will be held October 28 at 2 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 8787 River Road, Richmond. Visitation will follow in Thornton Hall. Interment will be private.

Ted and Joan were very kind and gave me a ride to All Saints Episcopal Church when it was too cold for me to be waiting outside my apartment building for the spec-tran van. On the way to All Saints, Ted made me ROTFL when we passed Derbyshire Rd and he pronounced Derbyshire as "Darbysheer".

Joan, I am so very sorry for your loss. Please extend my condolences to your family. Enjoying together - good food, music and your amazing greyhounds - was a highlight of David's retirement.
Peace be with you and your family.
