Elizabeth Flippo Obituary

Elizabeth Nelson Flippo, 89, of Ashland, died peacefully March 29, 2004 in her home. Mrs. Flippo, a native of Norfolk, Va., was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Franklin Carter Flippo Sr. She is survived by her two sons, Thomas Nelson Flippo and his fiancee, Brenda Fahed, Franklin Carter Flippo Jr. and his wife, Deborah. "Betty" Flippo leaves behind four beloved grandchildren, Thomas Carter Flippo and wife, Beverly, Elizabeth Flippo Hutchins and husband, William, Anne Harrison Flippo and Franklin Carter Flippo III. Mrs. Flippo loved and enjoyed four great-grandchildren, Brittany and Emily Flippo, and William and Thomas Hutchins. A brother-in-law, Arthur P. Flippo, and a sister-in-law, Lucy Flippo Wisely, also survive her. Part of her family for many years were Suzanne O. Flippo; caregivers, Georgia Rhem, Martha Morgan, Lucille Moore; and her devoted dog, Niki. Mrs. Flippo studied art at RPI and remained a dedicated patron of the arts, belonging to the Council of the Virginia Museum, and is the namesake for the Flippo Gallery at Randolph Macon College. An active member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, she served on the Altar Guild for many years. She loved flowers and participated in the Slash Cottage Garden Club. Mrs. Flippo enjoyed memberships in the County Club of Virginia and the Hanover Country Club. Her remains rest at the Reid Funeral Home where family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Ashland, Va. at 2 p.m. with interment following in Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Art Gallery at Randolph Macon College P.O. Box 5005, Ashland, Va. 23005, or to the Ashland Volunteer Rescue Squad.
