Elizabeth Hancock Obituary

Elizabeth Holden Hummel Hancock

February 4, 1945 - January 2, 2025

Lisa Hancock, 79, of Richmond, Virginia died at home on January 2nd, 2025. She was predeceased by her father, Capt. Robert Benton Hummel, her mother, Virginia Holden Hummel, and her husband, C. Thomas Hancock. She is survived by her sister, Mary Benton Hummel, her daughter, Sarabeth Hancock Creamer (Arthur), her son, Alexander Hancock, grandsons Holden and Lawson Creamer, and other friends and family whom she loved dearly.

Lisa was devoted to her family, art, and gardening. She was a thoughtful and loving mother, friend, and perhaps her favorite role of all, Grammy. A prayerful woman and faithful servant, Lisa was a parishioner at St. Benedict's Catholic Church.

She was the epitome of old-school etiquette. Self-titled, "The Vice President of Food Events," she was always ready to be a gracious hostess and planned many a social event. She was a prolific list maker, always carrying around her little notebook, which allowed her to get more done than seemed possible. She had a wicked sense of humor and loved to laugh, do puzzles, and enjoy her nightly glass of red wine.

She received her Bachelor's degree from Westhampton College, her Master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and studied at Harvard and in Italy. Her career in the art world spanned nearly 44 years at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where she began as an intern and retired as the Head Registrar. Always the caretaker, she is quoted as saying, "registrars mother the collection We're responsible for the physical well-being of every piece. It's like we're asking each one: 'Are you warm enough; cool enough; too wet; too dry; do you need nourishing in conservation?' We make sure the objects are safe, in storage or on display." She applied this same approach to the people she loved and to her garden, a hobby that brought her immense joy and satisfaction.

A service will be held at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Richmond, Virginia on January 29, 2025, at 10:30 in the morning.Internment will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Richmond, VA or to The University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies.

Lisa and I met in kindergarten and both lived in Blacksburg until we went to college. There are so many memories. We were in the same Girl Scout troop from second grade until we graduated from high school. Camping, hiking, singing! When my brother Dennis died in 2020 , Lisa wrote me and shared a wonderful memory she had of him. I loved her for that generous gift.

She was the beautiful, smart and always well- dressed Hummel cousin of the four of us. I always looked up to her. I am heartbroken for she family and close friends. Much love cousin!
