Elizabeth Hetherington Obituary

HETHERINGTON, Elizabeth "Lolly" Bell, age 81, died peacefully on November 15, 2022, at Westminster Canterbury Richmond. She is survived by her husband, Reverend Robert G. Hetherington; by three children and their spouses, Alexander Gunn Hetherington (Karen) of Vienna, Va., Eliza Hetherington Lowe (Michael) of Arlington, Va. and David Rankin Hetherington (Anne Sidney) of Richmond, Va.; eight grandchildren, Sarah, William, Matthew, Thomas, Abigail, Nicholas, Sidney and Mary; and her sister, Louise Bell Rogers of Washington, D.C. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Hester Bell McCoy.

Lolly was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., September 18, 1941, the daughter of the late James Alexander Bell and Mary Louise Succop Bell. She attended Ellis School, Abbot Academy, Briarcliff College, Connecticut College and Canisius College. She married Bob Hetherington in August 1965 and lived in Boston, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, N.Y., before settling in Richmond, Va., in 1984.

Lolly cherished her co-leadership with Bob of the Trinity Church Youth Group in Buffalo, from 1970 to 1984, as well as her career as a high school guidance counselor at Nardin Academy, Buffalo, from 1981 to 1984 and St. Catherine's School, Richmond, from 1986 to 1995. Her favorite place was the Solid Comfort Fishing Club on the French River, Ontario, Canada.

Lolly was known for her warmth, empathy, disarming sense of humor and personalized, nurturing advocacy for girls and women. She had a gift for creating emotionally fulfilling environments for individuals and small groups in almost any context. Her "radically inclusive" outlook is best illustrated by her signature salutation "Lovey," which enjoyed ubiquitous application across family, colleagues, existing friends and friends she was meeting for the first time.

A funeral service will be held at Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 8 N. Laurel St., Richmond, Va. 23220, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 26. Burial will be in Pittsburgh, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Richmond, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

I'm so sorry for your loss! Lolly and Bob were both loving friends to my parents, Bob and Peggy Seiler. Sending love to your whole family, especially Bob.

Lolly was part of my MS group at the Y. She also had many other fans at the Y; the mothers whose girls had gone to St. Catherines.. Lolly's warmth and quiet humor made everyone feel special. My sympathies to her family.
