Elizabeth Williams Obituary

WILLIAMS Elizabeth "Beth" Kesler Williams, 42, of Midlothian, lost her 10 year courageous battle with breast cancer on Sunday, November 5, 2006. She was born on February 11, 1964 in Winchester, Virginia, the daughter of William and Suzanne Kesler. Beth spent most of her life in Virginia. She graduated from Warren County High School in 1982, James Madison University in 1986 and received her law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law in 1989. She spent the majority of her professional career working the lottery industry worldwide. She loved her job, the travel opportunities and the people she worked with over the years. After her cancer diagnosis, Beth worked tirelessly with the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation and was instrumental in getting several key pieces of state and federal legislation passed. She was invited to the Clinton White House twice for her efforts. She also worked to raise awareness of breast cancer in younger women and helped the Massey Cancer Center over the years. Beth was preceded in death by her father, William Kesler; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Kesler Sr.; and her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Baldwin. Beth is survived by her mother, Suzanne Kesler; her loving and devoted husband, C. James Williams III (Jim); and four beautiful young children, Chase, Maddie, Mac and Patrick. Of everything in her life, she was most proud of her children and loved them more than anything. She was a great Mom who loved to bake cookies, volunteer at their school and take them to their activities. Also surviving are her stepdaughter, Alexa Williams; her aunt, Janet Evans; her father-in- law, C. J. Williams Jr.; sister, Katherine Barber and family; sister-in-law, Suzanne Garner and family; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves behind many dear friends, extended family members and neighbors who were all so important in her life. A Celebration of Beth's life will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 11551 Lucks Lane, Midlothian. Beth asked that attendees dress casually. In lieu of flowers, Beth requested that donations be made to the Elizabeth Kesler Williams Evergreen Field of Dreams Fund, c/o Leslie Haley, P.O. Box 32, Midlothian, Virginia 23113. Beth and Jim started this fund to renovate and add lights to the fields at Evergreen Elementary School where their children attend school and hundreds of others practice football, baseball and softball.

I did not know Beth very well, but I remember her energy, spirit and dynamism when she organized her stand at a lottery equipment exhibition at the Carrousel du Louvre or when you came to Paris and she wanted to see everything from Napoleon's monument at the Invalides to the Arc de Triomphe.
We always admired her courage and determination in fighting cancer, and specially for giving life to the baby she carried while undergoing a painful treatment.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you always, Jimmy, Chase, Maddie, Mac and Patrick, our "cousins d'Amérique". God bless you.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Beth..you helped me get through my own mother's cancer death in '81. I will never forget that difficult time, however it is all the times after that which brings such fond memories. Like tennis practices when you, poor dear, had to play doubles with me, or our bad case of the "giggles" in forensics class. You fought the good fight Beth. Rest in sweet peace.

Jim and Family,
Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family. We will continue to pray for you and the children. Beth was such an inspiration to so many during her life. She will be missed by so many people she has touched with her life that have come in contact with her from her work, school functions and softball games for Maddy. I will miss seeing her cheering on Maddy and the girls at the ball games. Please lean on God for support and your friends at this time and know that they are there for you and the children always.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this very painful time. While many years have passed since I last spent time with Beth, the many memories from our high school days still seem so vivid, especially our time together on the Warren County High School tennis team. Wishing you peace and comfort in the days ahead. Each of us who had the great fortune to know Beth are truly blessed.

I met Beth while we served on the
Board of Directors of the Virginia
Breast Cancer Foundation.
As I learned her medical story over
time, I had respect for how she handled ongoing difficult diagnoses
and treatments. Choosing to devote
the precious time she had to her family was a powerful treatment in itself. I know she loved her husband and those kids!
I hope they can all keep going, one
day at a time. A part of Beth will
shine out through each child and
keep her memory forever close.
I am saddened at her loss.

I have heard of Beth's struggle through family and friends in Front Royal over the years. Although I had met Beth, I knew her sister better when we were in high school (Hi Kathy). I am writing because I lost my husband to cancer 3 yrs ago tomorrow and am left with 3 young boys. My heart goes out to Beth's family and I know there aren't many words that help at a time like this. It is so incredibly tragic and unfair to lose someone so young. Take one step at a time and know that there will come a better day even though it may be impossible to feel that way at this moment.

Dear Williams Family,

It is in times like this that I wish I were more eloquent. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, as they have been for years now. Although we don’t get to see you often, we have great love for Beth and the whole Williams clan. Beth consistently amazed us with her spirit, energy and effectiveness. Although she was sick for so long, she accomplished so much, making us feel like we live life in slow motion. Beth made the world better, and more fun. Life truly isn’t fair, and we know this because Beth is gone. It seems God was tired of waiting to have her by his side.

Jim and family,
Most of us hope that we will somehow leave an impression when it's our time to leave this earth. The thing that I found remarkable about Beth is that her impression was so profound while she lived! She lived each day to its fullest and embraced life with such joy that she inspired everyone she met. How fortunate I feel to have been lucky enough to know her and her wonderful family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Jim,

I am so very lacking in ability to express my deep sympathy for you and your family. I have told my wife Autumn all I remember about Beth from our high school days. Together we have read the information in the links you have provided for us. Things we did not know previously.

Simply, we and the world are less without her.

God Bless
