Ellen Mason Obituary

Ellen Jewel Priddy Mason

July 11, 1932 - September 14, 2025

Ellen Jewel Priddy Mason went to be with her Savior on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

She was born on July 11, 1932 in Abilene, Virginia, the seventh of nine children, to William and Lula Priddy. Ellen married John Calvin Mason on August 4, 1956, and together they raised their family in Norfolk, Virginia.

She was an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Norfolk, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and served the community. In her later years, when she made her home in Richmond, she was a devoted member of Midlothian Baptist Church.

Ellen had a successful 25-year career in retail, working for Leggett's and Belk Department Stores. She was highly regarded for her excellence in men's clothing sales and received many accolades for her work before retiring in the early 2000s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her siblings, her son, Russell Reynolds and her daughter-in-law, Joan Reynolds.

She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Martin (Wayne) and Sandra Jessup (Carl); her grandchildren, Leigh Dunavant (Mike), Carrie Reynolds, John Reynolds (Megan), and Justin Jessup (Gabriella); and her great-granddaughters, Sarah Stuart, Anna Catherine, Abby Elizabeth, and Lainey McChesney.

Her legacy of faith, hard work, and devotion to family will live on for generations to come.

Her funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, September 20th, at the Chesterfield Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 14301 Ashbrook Parkway, with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Mom was always ready to ham it up in church or her senior apartment. She loved to play Minnie Pearl. The hillbilly singers or she even played gospel singer Vestal Goodman. She was created laughs and ready to have fun & entertain.

Mom Mason was a wonderful Mother in Law. We brought her in the RV to Naples almost four years ago. She became a Naples, Florida resident enjoying the fresh air and the sunshine. We were blessed to be able to spend all this time with her. She and my Mom Helen Martin always asked about each other over the last twenty five years. It was always an experience when we had them together. Mom Mason is now in Heaven. Loved her as another Mom

This world will not be the same without Ellen Mason. She was my grandmother-in-law, but I knew her simply as so many do - Grandma. When my own grandmothers passed away, Grandma reassured me I still have her and treated me as one of her own. She was lively and quick witted. I loved to hear her stories, which often left everyone howling in laughter but which also contained deep wisdom gained over a beautiful 93 years of life. She had a profound faith in the Lord, one demonstrated not just in words but through her selfless love of others. She left a wealth of memories for us to treasure - whether it was rocking in the sweet Virginia breeze on Sandy and Carl's porch, showing off the Christmas decorations in her apartment (which was overflowing with pictures of her family), seeing her childlike excitement watching an Elvis impersonator at the state fair, indulging in a Ukrops chocolate pie or Sandy's homemade holiday treats while bragging about her grandchildren and great-granddaughters, or a million other instances too numerous for this little box. Her legacy will on through her beautiful family and we will never forget her. <3

My Mom Ellen was a beautiful person inside and out, young and old. She had a child like spirit in many ways. She loved her china dolls, stuffed animals, trinkets and most of all pink. She was a pink girl all the way. She always had her own personal style and was accessorized with her jewelry. After retirement she became very involved in her ladies Sunday School class, sending cards, greeting and inviting others. She also participated in weekly ladies Bible study groups. She was faithful to her church and loved her pastor & his wife. She even continued to watch her church Midlothian Baptist on YouTube while living in Florida. She was a true prayer warrior and kept beautiful journals. I can only hope and pray I will be half the woman of God she was. Thank you mom for bring such a wonderful mom and for setting such a great example. You will live in my heart forever! I will meet you one day in heaven at the Cazbar!

We met Ellen when she moved to Florida. When she arrived in Naples she was happy to be in the warm Florida sunshine. We spent many holidays and dinners with her along with Deborah and Wayne. Ellen always had a story to tell about Deborah growing up. Ellen was always smiling and happy
She enjoyed the company. She never met a stranger. Ellen will be missed. We feel lucky we had the opportunity to have met and spent time with Ellen.

Ms Ellen was so loved and wonderfully cared for during the last four years of her sweet life. She lived with her daughter, Deborah, in Naples, Florida for the first two years. As Ms Ellens health declined, she then went into Assisted living the last two years, where Deborah continued to love on her and make sure her needs were met. Her room was beautifully decorated with her favorite color , pink. Deborah would take her two dogs, Buddy and Tobie to visit regularly. Oh how she loved seeing them. She would light up with a big smile when they came in to her room. Her time in Florida was sweet. She will be missed.

Also I had visited her at Deborah home in Naples Florida twice . She had a beautiful home there and looked so happy each time. Even the last time I went to see her in the assisted living place she was so pretty and had a beautiful room. I will miss her dearly.

AUNT Jewel was more like a second Mother to me. My mom Pauline was her sister and we had some wonderful memories coming to see AUNT Jewel and her family. And even after my mom passed she opened her home up to me and always enjoyed the visits with Deborah and Sandy and Uncle John. Hugs and prayers to all of you.

I had the honor & privilege of being her daughter. She came to Naples Florida to live in January 2021. She lived with my husband and I for 2 years. She loved our home. Rather it was having meals together, our dogs loving on her and the endless sunshine in Florida and day outings shopping. She was always amazed at the big beautiful blue skies and big white clouds here in Florida. She lived in a memory care assisted living the last 19 months where she had a beautiful room full of memories. The caregivers loved her and mom was always loving & gracious to them. Mom touched many lives during her time here and she always wanted to pray with the caregiver team. She was positive and happy most days even with the dementia decline. The last four years will forever be in my memory and it was a honor and privilege to care for my mom. She is resting peacefully in the arms of Jesus Christ.
Mom faithfully prayed for her family and asked for Gods protection over us. She had over 20 years of devotional prayer journals full of prayers for others.
Mom you will live in my heart forever and thank you for teaching me and setting a great example for me to live by.
