Emmett Wier Obituary

Emmett Nelson Wier

September 7, 1927 - February 28, 2025

Emmett Nelson Wier of Moseley, VA passed away peacefully at home on February 28th at the age of 97. He was the youngest of five children born to Lucille Smotherman and John Nelson Wier in Athens, Georgia. Growing up during the Great Depression, Emmett was always industrious. His first 'job' was selling coca cola at his cardboard storefront in his front yard to his older siblings and their dates. After graduating from Athens High School, Emmett served in the Merchant Marines in the Pacific (1944-45) before joining the United States Army and serving in Korea (1946-47). Subsequently, he attended his beloved University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) on the GI bill earning a BA in Business Administration. Soon after graduation, Emmett met and married Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Herndon, enjoying 57 years together. They had one daughter, Bess Leigh.

Emmett worked as a credit manager for Noland Company in Columbia and Charleston, SC and Richmond, VA. He also worked 35 years within the area of finance in Richmond, VA for Carrier Corporation's largest independent distributor. During these years, Emmett was an active member of River Road Presbyterian Church serving as a treasurer, Deacon and Boy Scout leader. Upon retirement in 1993, he and Betty moved to the 'rivah' in Urbanna, VA and built a home by the water and spent 13 wonderful years boating, fishing and enjoying friends and family before returning to Richmond in 2006 due to health reasons.

Emmett was an avid jogger, cyclist and bridge player as well as a thoughtful and compassionate man who enjoyed visiting friends in healthcare facilities throughout the years.

After Betty's death, Emmett found love again and married Doris Pringle. They enjoyed 13 years together in their lovely home on the Swift Creek Reservoir in Moseley, VA surrounded by friends and involved in many community activities.

Emmett's family, friends and loved ones will not lose the memory of his gentle kindness and genuine example of the quintessential Southern gentleman.

Emmett was predeceased by his parents and four siblings and their spouses: Johnny Wier (Maxine), Tommy Wier (Marianne), Edith Workman (Hank) and Sue Moseley (Ken).

Emmett is survived by his wife, Doris, daughter Bess Leigh Booze (David), grandson Raleigh Booze (Leah), granddaughter Caroline Bruce (Alex), and three great granddaughters; Autumn Booze and Brooke and Violet Bruce as well as many nieces and nephews.

Emmett will be remembered for his great sense of humor, strong work ethic and will power (except when chocolate was involved).

A Celebration of Life for Emmett will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 at the church of their membership:
