Eunice Wilder Obituary

WILDER, Eunice M., On January 23, 2022, Eunice M. Wilder passed away peacefully at age 83 after a brief illness.

A Philadelphia native, Eunice graduated from The Philadelphia High School for Girls and received a B.S. in Accounting from Howard University in 1959. It was during college when she met her former husband, former Virginia governor L. Douglas Wilder, with whom she had three children: Lynn, Larry and Loren.

Eunice began her career at Consolidated Bank & Trust Co. After taking time to raise her family, she resumed her career as a cost accountant at Reynolds Metals Company in 1976 and held the position for 10 years. During that time, she also obtained her real estate broker's license and worked at Fowlkes & Ricks, Inc. After obtaining a Certification in Public Accounting (CPA), Eunice left Reynolds to work at Coopers & Lybrand accounting firm. In 1992, she was appointed to the position of Treasurer of the City of Richmond by the Richmond Circuit Court judiciary. Eunice then won six successive elections for treasurer and served 25 years in this position before retiring in 2016.

Eunice was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia Association of Realtors, the Treasurers' Association of Virginia, and Leadership Metro Richmond.

Eunice was also a member of The Richmond Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and the National Epicureans and this year (2022) marks her 50-year membership in The Girl Friends, Inc.

Eunice exuded happiness, humor, generosity, charisma and enthusiasm. She had creative flair and an artistic spirit. She always exhibited grace and strength notwithstanding any challenges or obstacles and kept a healthy sense of humor throughout.

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Lucy Montgomery; and her three sisters, Jean, Jeannette and Sandra. She is survived by her three children, Lynn D. Wilder, Lawrence D. Wilder Jr. and Loren D. Wilder; two grandsons, Wilder J. James and Dean E. James; and nieces and nephews. A private funeral and interment will be held. Dear Beloved Family and Friends of Eunice M. Wilder.

Please accept my sincere condolences.

Eunice was my mother in law during my marriage to Loren, and Eunice has always been very kind and considerate to me through the years since I met her in 1991, shortly after Loren and I began dating.

Eunice was a wonderful conversationalist. I took much pleasure in discussing a wide variety of topics with her over the years, and she was very knowledgeable about many current events. Eunice was a straight shooter and never minced words.

Eunice was always very supportive of our family and she loved her grandchildren Wilder Joseph James and Dean Edward James with all of her heart and desired that they prosper in every area of their lives.

I often asked Eunice to pray for our family, and especially for Wilder and Dean and I let her know that I believe God has a wonderful plan for Wilder and Dean. I am very grateful for all of Eunice´s prayers, including those for my mother, who has also been facing serious health challenges. Both of my parents (Edward Exodus James and Joan Bolden James) loved Eunice and they knew that Eunice truly loved me and that Eunice was very supportive of my family and me.

I am a better person for having been Blessed with the opportunity to know Eunice M. Wilder and to have been a part of her family for more than 2 decades.

May all of Eunice´s, family, friends and acquaintances who are mourning her in this season find Peace of Jesus Christ which Surpasses all understanding, and choose to celebrate her life.

May the Perfect Will of God be Accomplished in the lives of all who are fondly remembering Eunice today.

Love of Jesus Christ,

Edward Joseph James

I went to high school with Eunice. We had wonderful times. She was quite bright, loved to have fun but was also serious about her "homework." Although she did not return to Philadelphia after college, we still remained friends. Through the years there were many celebrations and from time to time some visits. But I'll mostly miss the long spirited telephone conversations that began when our children were young and continued through our retirement. So long my friend. I'll love you forever. Cynthia Muse

I worked with Eunice as a cost accountant with Reynolds Metals during the early 80´s. She was quick-witted, outspoken, and truly memorable. I loved her stories from the years she was raising her family.
