Florence Gorman Obituary

GORMAN, Florence Mary (Murphy), 99, died peacefully on May 9, 2023. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence "Larry" Gorman. She is survived by her children, Janie (Don) Curtis, Melissa (Elliott) Skorupa, Lance (Shelly) Gorman, John (Cheryl) Gorman; as well as 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Flo had a very long and happy life. Born in Attleboro, Mass. in 1923, the youngest of five children. She graduated from Attleboro High, attended Connecticut College, Class of 1944. Subsequently she enrolled in the accelerated Occupational Therapy program, a fairly new field at the time, at Tufts Medical School. In 1948, she married Larry Gorman. They relocated to Spearfish in the Black Hills of South Dakota for Larry's job as a Geologist for the Atomic Energy Commission. With great joy, they started their family by adopting their eldest child, Janie. When the mining project ended in 1957, they were transferred back east and settled in Richmond, Va., where they enjoyed experiencing a new part of the country. During their early years in Richmond, the family grew, welcoming three more children in close succession. Flo stayed home to raise her kids and then returned to work as an OT at MCV. She enjoyed being an active part of her community and spent years demonstrating her faith through volunteer ministry at St. Bridget's Catholic Church. She loved tennis (with mediocre results), playing bridge, baking wonderful pies, sewing beautiful garments and many Halloween costumes for her Grands. She spent the last 10 years of her life at Cedarfield in Richmond.

"She Lived She Died, She Laughed She Cried" is all she ever wanted to say about herself. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bridget's Catholic Church on Friday, May 19 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Bridget's Church or the Central Virginia Food Bank.

Flo and I worked together at MCV. She was a unique person and loved her humor. She helped me calm down doing budget time. Always remember Martini time. A good soul.
